Introduction

Only a little while ago, HiFiMAN surprised us with their budget friendly-ish HE-400S for just $299. Today, we will be taking a good, hard look at their top-of-the-line HE-1000, which unlike the name may imply is more than 2.5x as expensive. The HE-1000 is the pinnacle of HiFiMAN's efforts in planar magnetic driver design, featuring some pretty exclusive materials, like a real leather headband and milled aluminum vents and trim. This brings its price to a staggering $2999, which puts it into a league of its own both in terms of price and technical absurdities. The HE-100 features a unique nanometer thin diaphragm material, for instance, and one can only imagine the manufacturing difficulties due to such a material.
