Shape

By and large, the R.A.T. has the same shape as the R.A.T. 8+ ADV, albeit a bit smaller, yet with a slightly higher back. Describing the shape is complicated by the fact that the R.A.T. DWS can be customized in several ways. The back may be extended, right-side panel swapped for one with a different profile, and left-side panel unscrewed, although this serves no purpose whatsoever. Still, some key components of the shape are present no matter what. The R.A.T. DWS is a notably wide mouse, but not that long relative to its width. The lack of a centered hump or any kind of slope is noticeable, as is the lack of any flares, or anything else of the sort. In terms of overall ergonomics, the R.A.T. DWS works surprisingly well—all buttons are readily in reach without changing grip. The thumb rest on the left side is permanently attached, but thankfully, the so-called "precision aim" button is out of the way. The most notable difference to the R.A.T. 8+ ADV is actually the sensor position, which is a fair bit higher on the DWS.

As for grip styles, I'd say the R.A.T. DWS generally suits palm and claw grip, more or less dependent on which back cover is installed. It's a medium-sized but incredibly wide mouse with a barely pronounced hump, which should make it generally suitable for most hand sizes. For reference, my hands are 19 cm long and 10 cm wide, and I found the R.A.T. DWS quite comfortable in claw grip.

Dimensions

This table includes the dimensions of the Mad Catz R.A.T. DWS and several other right-handed ergonomic mice. "Front height" denotes the distance between the base and main buttons. Measurements with two decimals have been taken with a caliper, while those with one decimal have been taken with a ruler.
