Value and Conclusion

  • The Onikuma K5 is available online for $25/€23.
  • Good sound quality (for the price)
  • Excellent microphone
  • Great value for money
  • Mediocre comfort (especially if you have a large head)
  • Unnecessarily bulky remote control
  • Subpar packaging
With a price tag of a mere $25/€23, the Onikuma K5 is a gaming headset aimed at gamers on a very tight budget. If this were just another cheap, poorly made product, like many you'll find in various web-shops, we wouldn't be wasting your time with it. However, that's definitely not the case. I'm inclined to call it a hidden gem because in terms of sound and microphone performance, it punches way, way above its weight.

Some aspects of the Onikuma K5 make it blatantly obvious that it doesn't cost a lot. It looks and feels plasticky, its remote control is mindbogglingly massive, and the lighting effects seem completely out of place. The packaging is subpar as well with the text on the box unevenly printed, and there's nothing aside from a bit of bubble wrap protecting the contents. It could be more comfortable, too, although I consider it acceptable in that regard.

What it doesn't offer in terms of build quality and design, it makes up for in sound and microphone quality. Its boosted bass and tamed highs result in a fun, explosive sound that manages to stay detailed and revealing enough to hear your enemy's footsteps and figure out where you're being shot from. The K5 doesn't sound natural or airy at all, but you're getting much, much more than you'd ever dare expect from a $25 gaming headset. I tested many gaming headsets priced close to $100 that sound worse than the Onikuma K5, and then there's that pivotable microphone. Simply put, it does what it's supposed to do flawlessly. Your teammates will hear you loud and clear; again, like you're using a $100 gaming headset instead of one that costs only a fraction of that.

All things considered, if money is tight, get the Onikuma K5. There's no chance you won't be completely satisfied with what you're getting for a mere $25.
