DOOM Eternal
Released: 2020 — API: Vulkan — Engine: id Tech 7
DOOM Eternal is one of 2020's bright spots in gaming. It is a love letter to fast-paced run and gun first-person shooters of old, but is crafted not to feel that way. "Eternal" is designed to re-imagine the basic lore of DOOM II Hell on Earth; the demons from the depths of hell on Mars have made their way to Earth. A whole new storyline has been retconned, which sees Earth and humanity being 'consumed' in an apocalyptic harvest by god-like beings from Heaven called the Makyrs. Doomguy fights to defend his homeworld from hordes of monsters of both realms. DOOM Eternal sees the introduction of new gameplay mechanics and provides plenty of new glory kills. Several DOOM II demons, such as the classic Arachnotron, Pain Elemental, and Arch Vile make a comeback.
DOOM Eternal is based on the latest id Tech 7 engine by id Software and exclusively runs on the Vulkan API. The game is extremely well optimized despite generous amounts of eye candy. We ran it at the Ultra Nightmare setting for our testing.
