RAID Sync & Rebuilding Speed - AVG Consumption »

Power Consumption

Let us now check on just how much power the TS-431P2 needs in sleep, idle, and during heavy throughput.

We use a GW Instek GPM-8212 power analyzer for all of our power consumption measurements.

Idle and Load

With the NAS fully loaded and in idle, QNAP says the unit to consume 23.72 W, while we measured 25 W, which is pretty close, especially since we probably used a different HDD configuration (QNAP doesn't mention the HDDs with which it took its power measurements). Unfortunately, we had some problems putting the HDDs we used in standby mode, which had us exclude those measurements. A single measurement we managed to take with four HDDs installed was 11.5 W.

Power Consumption in Standby Mode

Vampire power, or phantom load, is the amount of power a device consumes when it is switched off but still plugged into the power grid. According to the ErP Lot 6 2013 directive, vampire power should be below 0.5 W.

Even with the ErP option disabled in QTS, the NAS consumes less than 0.5W in standby.
