The unit uses the for a NAS pretty fast Intel i3-6100 processor. It is initially supported by 8 GB of RAM but the RAM total can be increased to 64 GB. In the storage section are two M.2 slots, two 2.5" bays for SSD drives, and four 3.5" bays for slower mechanical drives, which, however, can offer higher capacities than SSDs. Lastly, the TVS-682T is compatible with QNAP's TX-800P and TX-500P Thunderbolt 2 expansion enclosures through which its provided storage space can be increased to upward of 416 TB!
The I/O includes the basic audio ports and three HDMI ports. One of the bundled HDMI ports supports the newest HDMI protocol (2.0b), which makes HDR (High Dynamic Range) video content possible since it supports up to 18 Gbps bandwidth. With as much bandwidth, the HDMI 2.0b port supports 4K resolution with a refresh rate of up to 60 Hz. The older HDMI 1.4 port is in comparison limited to 24 frames at 4K.
What differentiates this NAS from the rest of the bunch is the inclusion of two Thunderbolt 2 ports, which support up to 20 Gbit speeds. These ports are two times faster than the 10 Gbit Ethernet ports, a couple of which also come with the unit. The only downside with Thunderbolt 2 is the high price Thunderbolt cables, and to make matters worse, QNAP doesn't include any such cables with in product's bundle, which is a great shame given its huge price tag.
Strange also is the use of three small diameter fans for cooling. Such a large NAS should use fans with at least a diameter of 120 mm to keep its HDDs and other components cool. However, QNAP claims this NAS to be very silent despite its small fans, which we will obviously verify with our equipment.
The PSU is probably the most important part in a system that is designed to operate around the clock. The TVS-682T uses an internal PSU with a capacity of 250 W, which will easily cover its needs. The provided warranty is 3-years long, which is decent for a NAS, and at $1900, its price is quite stiff. This NAS is definitely only for professional users in need of an incredibly fast storage server or for very demanding business environments.
