Performance Summary - Internal & External Storage

The following graph shows the NAS's overall performance in all the tests we conducted using our custom-made software.

In RAID 5 and 6 configurations, the weak CPU was the limit, so transfer speeds didn't exceed 45 MB/s. The situation improved for the better with all other configurations as the small NAS topped many normally sized NAS servers equipped with the faster 3.5" HDDs we normally use in our NAS reviews. So if your prerogative is speed and your intent is to store non-critical data on this NAS, you had better avoid high RAID levels to, ideally, configure your drives in JBOD (Just a Bunch of Disks) instead. External storage devices should definitely use the EXT4 filesystem as it clearly smoked NTFS drives. The second filesystem may be one Windows OS users recognize, but it is significantly slower in this particular case.

Performance Comparison Graphs

Let's now compare the DS414slim's performance to that of other NAS devices.
