I would like to thank Synology for supplying the review sample.

I reviewed the DS918+ three years ago, so it is now time to take a look at its successor, the DS920+, which looks the same externally. The main differences between these models are listed below.

Synology DS920+ vs DS918+
 DS920+DS918+
CPUIntel Celeron J4125
Quad-Core
2.0 GHz, boost up to 2.7 GHz
10 W TDP
Intel Celeron J3455
Quad-Core
1.5 GHz, boost up to 2.3 GHz
10 W TDP
GPUIntel UHD Graphics 600
250–750 MHz
up to 8 GB
Intel HD Graphics 500
250–750 MHz
up to 8 GB
Memory4 GB DDR4 onboard
(expandable, up to 8 GB)
4 GB SO-DIMM DDR3L
(expandable, up to 8 GB)

The significant differences are in the faster CPU and RAM and the more capable, embedded GPU of the Intel Celeron J4125 SoC used by the DS920+. There is no doubt that the new model packs more power, but I am disappointed by the networking section. With many mainboards nowadays providing 2.5 Gb support and compatible switches priced reasonably, I expected faster Ethernet ports. In NAS servers, networking capabilities are just as crucial as the SoC; Synology should upgrade this section, too.

As expected, the price is stiff, but a three-year warranty has been included, and around an additional $100 will get you their EW201 bundle, which extends it to five years.
