Initial Setup

You have to turn the NAS on before you can run the Setup Wizard. Thecus Setup Wizard will find the server's IP on the network and will ask you for the default password, which is "admin." You can now dial in your network's settings, but do make sure to change the password to keep your data safe!

Thecus Setup Wizard is especially useful for novice users because it allows them to easily complete the initial setup phase, though it lacks the features and capabilities of similar programs by the competition. It, for example, cannot check if the NAS has the latest firmware installed; nor can it install an up-to-date version if you want to perform a firmware update. Its configuration options are also very basic since you can't set network or cloud-based network shares. We also had to have our test PC's display use a larger fontsize than is the norm because we run our screen at 4K resolution and Thecus' program interface wasn't displaying properly at 4K, an issue contemporary programming techniques with frameworks would resolve (e.g. the Windows Presentation Foundation framework, or WPF for short).

Web Interface

The login page looks very simple compared to those of other NAS vendors. This is fine with us, though.


The System Initialization Setup Wizard will greet you after your first boot into ThecusOS.


The windowed interface looks similar to those offered by the competition. The most interesting icons are in the top-left and top-right corners.


Use the admin menu to pick the display language, change the password, and logout. We would like to see reboot and shutdown options here as well. Right below the admin menu is the Resources Monitor widget.


Enough display languages are provided, with several Asian ones included.


The notifications icon will give you important bits of information regarding the system and its operation.
