You will find numerous N7710-G compatible applications in
Thecus's APP Center. Since mentioning all of them is impossible, we will only refer to the most interesting ones.
Local Display & XBMC
Local Display allows you to exploit the NAS's HDMI port, so you could manage the NAS over a monitor after plugging it into the HDMI port by installing this module. Use a USB keyboard and mouse to navigate the UI. A browser is already embedded into the package should you want to browse the web and stream multimedia content. Providing numerous features, XBMC is probably the best entertainment hub with a media player.
All the above sounds really interesting, but we simply couldn't install Local Display on the N7710-G. Downloading the corresponding file off various locations and even performing a system reset to defaults, we still couldn't get Local Display installed. Since Local Display is essentially a per-requisite for XBMC, we couldn't test the performance of the latter, either, and while Local Display and XBMC aren't crucial to such a business-centric unit, both add a lot of features, so it would have been nice to see both fully operational. We will make a point of letting Thecus know so they can provide a fix as soon as possible.
Thecus Dashboard Server
Install Thecus Dashboard Server for full access to all the features of the Thecus Dashboard on your iPhone.
Dropbox
Use this module to synchronize files and folders located on the NAS with your own personal Dropbox account. Your Dropbox folder will automatically be saved to the cloud to make sure your data is safe.
IP Cam
For the latest IP CAM compatibility list, please see
this list. The N7710-G supports up to ten IP cameras, but the relevant IP CAM application unfortunately provides limited functionality and looks pretty poor compared to what the competition has to offer. It is a shame Thecus didn't take to camera surveillance seriously.
Although a pretty popular model, we ran into problems with the Foscam IP camera (FI8910W) we tried.
NZBGet
NZBGet is a cross-platform, binary newsgrabber for .nzb files. Written in C++, it supports client/server mode, automatic par-check/-repair, and web-interface. NZBGet hardly consumes any system resources to make sure it does not burden the hardware your NAS utilizes.
T-OnTheGo
This module allows Apple iPhone and iPAD devices to connect with a Thecus NAS from everywhere in the world. You only need an Internet connection. T-OnTheGo supports file upload and download and multimedia playback.
You need to install two applications on the NAS and the T-ONTheGo client to your phone or tablet.
VirusScan module (McAfee Antivirus)
VirusScan, otherwise known as McAfee Antivirus, is the best safeguarding measure to detect and prevent virus attacks. Install VirusScan and your vital data will be protected, with advanced features eliminating possible threats.
Its main features include the following:
- Removal of viruses, worms, and other malicious code
- Reliable and accurate detection without a costly false-alarm problem
- Effective scanning of compressed, archived, and packed files
- Scan engine SDK for easy integration into third-party applications
Transmission
Transmission is an open source bittorrent client you can use to download torrents directly to the NAS without the intervention of a client PC. It is very easy to use, but don't be fooled by its simple interface as you will discover many advanced feature on its settings page.
Plex
Use Plex to Stream local and online content to your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Android, and Windows Phone 7 devices. You can also stream content to DLNA-compatible devices like smart TVs and gaming consoles.
Piczza!
Keep all your photos in one place with Piczza by exploiting an advanced interface. An administrator can create multiple accounts to allow everybody in your home or business to manage their own photo gallery, or browse through anyone else's public albums.
