VAXEE ZYGEN NP-01 Review

Packaging

On the NP-01, the minimalist approach extends not only to the aesthetics: Aside from the well-cushioned mouse, nothing else is found in the black and white box. This is part of VAXEE's commitment to sustainability, producing as little waste as possible.

Weight

My scale shows around 72 g (+/- 1 g). VAXEE cites a weight of 75 g, so my unit ended up a bit below target. At 72 g, the NP-01 is just 2 g heavier than the similarly sized and RGB-less Endgame Gear XM1—a very good result.

Cable

The NP-01 features a paracord-like, braided cable. It's a bit stiffer than most other paracord-like cables—I'd rank it somewhere similarly to the Razer Viper Mini cable. VAXEE cites durability as the reason for choosing this cable over more flexible ones. Its measured length is 2.05 m. The cable has an attached ferrite bead, which reduces signal noise, as well as a gold-plated USB connector.

Feet

The feet on the NP-01 are white-dyed pure PTFE (Teflon) feet with slightly rounded edges. Their size and shape is reminiscent of but not identical to many Zowie mouse feet. Unlike on Zowie mice, no replacement mouse feet are included in the box, which is a bit of a letdown. Small indentations next to the feet make them easy to remove.

Glide would be perfectly fine if it weren't for certain areas of my pad scratching the underside of the mouse due to the feet being too thin. Feet thickness is supposed to be 0.45 mm instead of the usual 0.6 mm, the latter of which are available for purchase separately. I'm saying "supposed" because I've measured them to be 0.40 mm thick. The reason VAXEE gives for going with thinner feet is better CPI accuracy. As shown later, CPI deviation is rather high and exclusively positive with the stock 0.4 mm feet, so going with the 0.6 mm feet as the default no doubt would've been the better choice.

I've been informed by VAXEE that providing an option to choose between the 0.45 mm and 0.6 mm feet as default during purchase is planned.
