In the realm of über high-end in-ears where the Westone ES5s roam there are only three real competitors, the JH AUDIO JH|16PROs (8 driver design) and the Ultimate Ears 18 Pros (6 driver design). The Westone ES5s beats them both when it comes to price. They are $200 cheaper than their JH AUDIO counter parts and $400 cheaper than the Ultimate Ears alternative which basically makes them good value for money. Given we have yet to review the Ultimate Ears top end offering, but in case of the JH AUDIO custom in-ears the Westone ES5s are right up there in terms of sound quality. Both completely annihilate our now elderly custom in-ears the LiveWires T2s and the Sleek-Audio CT6s.
The Westone ES5s are very interesting due to the different design approach with just one low end driver and a soft vinyl canal piece. Fit wise the vinyl makes great sense, the ability to bend a little means that the seal stays perfect even if you move your jaws a lot, this is crucial for live performers. For the music aficionados the ES5's detailed sounds are sure to get them a following. If you are looking for a detail orientated sound and have $950 to spare the ES5s should be on your short list. Detail wise these earphones can compete with even full size high-end headphones.
