Value and Conclusion

  • The XTS-1000 Platinum retails for around €185 (around $231) without VAT in popular online stores throughout the EU and for $229.99 on Newegg.
  • Delivered full power at 46°C
  • High efficiency
  • Tight load regulation
  • Excellent ripple suppression
  • Silent operation under normal conditions (however, once pushed, the fan becomes annoyingly loud)
  • Performance in Advanced Transient Response tests
  • Japanese caps
  • High hold-up time
  • Semi-passive operation (selectable)
  • Fully modular design
  • Flat and stealth modular cables
  • 5 year warranty (however, Seasonic offers seven with their equivalent retail platforms)
  • Noisy once stressed
  • Fan-mode-selection switch location is inconvenient
XFX was very wise to trust Seasonic with their high-end PSU line (and not only) given the OEM is a key player when it comes to PSU - regardless of Super Flower's significant presence within the last few years. Seasonic, after all, is almost 40 years old, has a ton of experience, and knows how to play ball in this highly competitive field. Moreover, newly emerging OEMs like SF have to prove they can handle such a large pie of the market, especially when it comes time to provide their customers with the support for the very long warranty periods their products come with. I am mostly worried about a change in attitude towards customers after a company makes a good name for itself and sales have increased. Hopefully, such won't be the case with SF. Yet competition is a very good thing, and before SF's emergence, Seasonic was basically on its on, in its own separate category, so it is very good to now have another worthy competitor in the field. Seasonic is also too conservative in some areas by sticking to smaller fans, for example. Such fans produce more noise, which makes most Seasonic retail units noisy as soon as conditions are suboptimal. I just wish Delta had remained in the consumer PSU market, although they are a pretty expensive OEM. Back to the main subject of this epilogue, though: The XTS-1000 is a truly high-end PSU that aims directly at the very top of the relevant 1 kW category. Its performance is excellent in all areas, and the FDB fan and this unit's semi-passive mode combine to deliver a quiet experience so long as you don't push the PSU too hard; however, do and you should have some ear-plugs handy if you can't cope with noise well. I am pretty sure XFX and Seasonic could have loosened up the XTS-1000's fan profile for high operating temperatures given the unit is very efficient, but it seems as though Seasonic didn't want to compromise reliability one bit, especially over time.

This Platinum-certified PSU is for users who need a lot of capacity, great performance, and increased reliability. XFX backs it up with a five year warranty, which, while two years less than Seasonic's warranty for their equivalent retail implementations, is still long enough, especially for a PSU. If you need a top-notch PSU and have the money to buy it, you should definitely take a serious look at XFX's flagship unit since it is quieter than Seasonic's siblings and uses an FDB fan - a bearing-type considered superior to the others. Finally, for all of you who actually care about a PSU's looks, the XTS-1000 also sports an interesting design that sets it apart from the competition.
