The OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) initiative wants to bring computing to the poorer countries and MIT has been working on a $100 dollar laptop for a while. The first working prototype pictures have been uploaded on flickr. Take a look:
I still don't understand the complete idea of this, there is a huge problem of starvation in developing countries yet they give them laptops. I know that having laptops may help them to develop better in the future but I would've thought it would be better to ensure that people have their basic needs first.
I mean seriously, why not make them at least look like something that wasn't created in Elmo's workshop? I understand Kids are the main idea behind this, but I still would have made it look more Computer and less Speek and Spell.
wazzledoozleYou can give a man a fish, and he will be fed for a day. You can teach a man to fish, and he is fed for life.
Hopefully these laptops will help to develop people's knowledge of basic things in science and agriculture, so they can better their own lifes.
Yeah...wise words...but what are you saying? If you give a poor kid a laptop, they are happy, but if you teach him how to make a laptop, he can sell them and be fed for the rest of his life?

No... I'm saying these laptops will help entire communities learn more about efficient methods for growing their own food, will connect different communities with wi-fi so they can trade goods easier and establish a little bit of civilization in otherwise anarchist lands.

either that, or we'll be finding a ton of new hackers in africa that are able to just p00n linux systems in the us.

That's a cool idea... wifi hotspots in Africa with all these kids using their windup laptops to talk on msn!
