Samsung Unveils Optical SMART Hub to Share Content Faster and Easier

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a worldwide leader in digital consumer electronics and information technology, announced today Optical SMART Hub, the SE-208BW optical disc drive (ODD) for backing up and accessing all your media files - pictures, movies, MP3s and data files.

The new Optical SMART Hub can be accessed from your tablet, smartphone, and Smart TV and up to four devices can access simultaneously. The Optical SMART Hub helps extend the storage on devices by acting as a personal cloud. The Optical SMART Hub allows CD and DVD writing function without ever turning on a desktop or notebook. With the addition of a Samsung application, users can enable their smartphone, tablet, and PC access to the Optical Smart Hub. The app for the Samsung smartphones and tablets are available now.

The new Optical SMART Hub allows users to:

- Build a Wi-Fi home cloud system
- Take advantage of Wireless, Ethernet, USB connectivity
- Support mobile devices, PC, Read/Write devices
- Establish scalable support for storage with external USB

The SE-208BW combines an external ODD with a wireless module to provide wider end-user benefits. Offering CD/DVD streaming and writing capabilities, the SE-208BW features Samsung's APP to enable smartphone, tablet and PC users to wirelessly stream and play CDs and DVDs on their smart devices to listen to music or watch their favorite movies.

The Optical SMART Hub breaks new ground by functioning as a Wireless AP router changing broadband Internet service with a cable from the wall to Wi-Fi Internet connection so that all family members can enjoy wireless connection at home.

For TV's with data-sharing standard DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) compatibility, the SE-208BW features DLNA Apps, such as Allshare, which enables users to view drive content through the TV menu to play multimedia files on CDs and DVDs. Performing as a Digital Media Server, the SE-208BW will be a keystone of home entertainment, providing a connection between mobile devices and TV or PC, and also a triangular connection among TVs, PCs and mobile devices. The drive compliments any home entertainment system with a sleek hi-gloss surface built around a slim case measuring 150 mm x 25 mm x 198 mm and 430 g.

For users looking for smart backup solutions, the SE-208BW can wirelessly connect to a smartphone or tablet PC to easily backup data such as pictures, video or contacts onto CDs, DVDs, or connected USB storages without ever turning on a desktop or notebook computer. The SE-208BW also supports Dynamic DNS which enables the drive to work as a private server.

The SE-208BW drive is engineered to be compatible with all major operating systems, including Win7 and Mac OS. The drive boasts Buffer Under Run technology to prevent errors that may result from writing speeds that exceed data transfer speeds, while also enabling PC multitasking.

The external drive provides a variety of speeds across different data media types including: 24X CD-ROM, 24X CD-RW, 8X DVD reading and 8X DVD±R, 5X DVD-RAM, 6X DVD+R Dual Layer, 6X DVD-R Dual Layer, 8X DVD+RW, 6X DVD-RW recording.

As an eco-friendly product, the drive offers low-power consumption and lead-free soldering technology, a design that complies with international environmental regulations that limit the use of hazardous materials.

An Android app for the Optical SMART Media Hub is already available, with an app for iPhone set to launch soon. Samsung also has plans for a Kindle app and Smart TV app.

The Optical SMART Hub SE-208BW optical disk drive, available in Q1 2012, will retail for MSRP $129.99.
