AMD Radeon HD 7990 "Malta" Listed on Ebay

A lucky bloke who managed to score an engineering sample of AMD's upcoming Radeon HD 7990 sought to make a quick buck by auctioning it on Ebay. An opening bid of $0.99, and 36 bids (ATP) later, the auction has reached the $1,125 mark. The engineering sample is said to ship with clock speeds of 950 MHz core, and 6.00 GHz memory. The dual-GPU graphics cards ships with two fully-loaded AMD "Tahiti" GPUs, with 2048 stream processors each, and a 384-bit memory interface holding 3 GB of GDDR5 memory, each. If anything the Ebay listing gave us some gorgeous pictures of the beast.

+1 I was thinking I will wait till end and put down 1.5k. Its at over 15K now.

Apple and Nvidia are going to be Pissed lol

Edit: what you going on about cadaveca? The top bidder has over 77 and the 2nd one has 44 feedback (There are plenty of unique bidders). Even if the top 2 bidders cancel, its still over 8K.

I will pass judgment when auction finishes lol

BTW, has anyone else noticed that this card is running at 950MHz(atleast according to the seller)? This doesn't rhyme with the fact that it is faster than a "normal " 7990, unless they indeed did some chip-level redesign!

I suppose another explanation is that 950MHz is simply the base clock, and that it turbos way higher.

cadaveca15k right this moment, and by a bidder who has never bid on ANYTHING...EVAR. :p Just a big joke, this one.
My guess was the final bid would be $4K tops. I threw in a bid just for fun. It's up to $25K now?

Yep, there's one born every minute.

i donnt know much about how ebay bidding works but if they are all valid bids, then I predict this card going for 75k

Crazier things have happened. I think W1zz was right, it's a publicity stunt by AMD, with thier execs bidding on it, lol.

Even better, they'll be paying themselves with company money for the card the company produced, and then write off the expense while filling their own pockets. Arseholes.

This person is also listing it as new and unused, yet he 'tested it'.........:banghead:
He should have listed it as "new, other" or flat out used.

Many of these recent 50k+ bidders do have above a 75 positive feedback score, but some also have bid retractions in their history. My guess is someone from AMD is jacking up the price sky high(or seller with ghost accounts/ or friends accounts). Hopefully AMD contacts ebay to put an end to this(if not a PR stunt by them in the first place).

Seeing the nice pics of the new card was pretty cool though.

I would rather spend almost £4k to buy 4 Titans than rather pay over £60K for a graphics card which I believe to merely have the power of two 7970s which are built in one graphics card (which would cost around £700-£800 for two individual graphics cards) in the same way two 680s (two individual 680s would cost £800-900) are built into one graphics card to make the 690 (well in most places price is generally at the lower part of £800 now opposed to being more than £850).

I'd rather buy 92 Titans, and at the current price save myself $1100 bucks.

btarunrIf HD 6990 is anything to go by, the two GPUs in an HD 7990 could feature a different device ID from HD 7970. Today's drivers can't make heads or tails of the card.
yes it has a different id 679b

And the funny thing is with some shipping hullabaloo inserted into the mix, this will probably arrive later than if he had just picked up a retail card off a store shelf in a week's time.
