ASUS Announces Republic of Gamers Announces G501 Ultra-Slim Gaming Laptop

ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) today announced the G501 series gaming laptop. One of the thinnest laptops in its class, G501 is just 20.6mm tall and weighs as little as 2.06kg (for non-touchscreen models) - ideal for gaming on the go.

G501 is powered by the 4th-generation Intel Core i7 processor and the new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M graphics for an unrivalled gaming experience. This impressive power is supported by ASUS-exclusive Hyper Cool technology with dual independent fans, delivering smooth, stable performance for both gaming and professional content creation. In addition, G501 has a 15.6-inch 4K/UHD (ultra-high definition) display with 8.2-million pixels to treat users to incredibly detailed visuals and lifelike colors.
Ultraportable design for gaming on the go
ROG G501 is one of the world's thinnest gaming laptops, with a height of just 20.6mm. It features a lightweight aluminum construction and weighs just 2.06kg (non-touchscreen). Its modern, elegant design sports red bezel accents and gaming features like a red-backlit keyboard with 1.6mm of key travel for a responsive feel, a numeric keypad, and marked WASD cursor keys.

Exclusive Hyper Cool technology
G501 is also the coolest and quietest gaming laptop on the market, with exclusive Hyper Cool technology built in. This advanced cooling system employs dual fans and copper heat sinks to remove heat efficiently with minimal fan noise. Both processor (CPU) and graphics-processing unit (GPU) are cooled independently based on each component's demands to ensure maximum efficiency - delivering extremely cool gaming experiences that are both whisper-quiet and silky smooth.

Uncompromised gaming performance and fast content creation
ROG G501 is powered 4th-generation Intel Core i7-4720HQ processor for the smooth, powerful performance required to drive today's fast-paced games. G501 also features the latest NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M graphics with up to 4GB of GDDR5 video memory for sharp, vivid visuals and smoother in-game animations. The powerful GPU also drives hardcore content-creation, enabling even the most demanding creative to produce any kind of content on the go.

In addition, G501 can be specced with PCI Express x4 (PCIe x4) solid-state disks (SSDs) for data-transfer speeds of approximately 1400MB/s - more than twice (2X) as fast as SATA III SSDs or 16X faster than SATA III hard disk drives! Optional Onboard Intel Thunderbolt technology provides a single-cable data and graphics interface with speeds of up to 10Gbit/s - twice the bandwidth of USB 3.0.

Immersive 4K/UHD visuals and ASUS SonicMaster audio
ROG G501 has a 15.6-inch, 4K/UHD display with 8.2-million pixels to give users sharper visuals and vibrant colors for an immersive viewing experience. This in-plane switching (IPS) display has wide 178-degree viewing angles, and gives improved contrast and color consistency even when viewed from extreme positions in both the horizontal and vertical planes. G501 features ASUS Splendid enhances color brightness, contrast, and sharpness to produce deeper, richer colors for a visually stunning experience when viewing any content. In addition, the built-in HD camera provides excellent recording performance even in low-light environments.

G501 features ASUS SonicMaster audio, incorporating ICEpower, Bang & Olufsen technology, for high-quality sound. ASUS AudioWizard gives users five preset audio modes with settings tailored to suit different game genres.

Might want to recheck that headline :D

On a more serious note, do they really think a GTX 960M is enough to power a 4K display? Also wondering how astronomical this thing's price will be

So good it was announced twice.
The 960m should be adequate for the 15.6 4K screen, but not a large 4K monitor with all the eye candy.

what? a for GPU 4K = 4K no matter what size screen is...

960m is capable card - but it you will have to turn resolution down - even under 1080 at most demanding games... but it definitely will run 4K porn on your 4K screen.

Looks decent enough but nothing too special and definitely nothing that makes me regret just ordering my MSI GS60 Ghost Pro, phew.

Real professional has spoken :D GPU apparently have to count how big the pixel is in real world or something :)........ Seriously, it doesn't.

And about the notebook, I'm just wondering what is advantage of independent cooling of GPU and CPU. I have this design in old gaming Asus G53 and CPU fan could use some help from the GPU one. This solution is much more noisy. But as it is cheaper, Asus just markets it as advantage.

No kidding, pixels don't change size on larger screens.
Detail is more noticeable on larger screens so users tend to turn up the eye candy, which isn't needed on small screens.
Either i'm not making myself clear enough, people like to nit pick, or there are a lot of people lacking comprehension skills.

4K with a GTX 960M gaming laptop.

You have failed Asus.

A GTX 960M is a little slower than a desktop GTX 750 Ti.

*facepalm*

that doesn't even make sense. 4k on one screen is the same as 4k on another.

and the size of 4k screens you can get today, you don't need AA whatsoever

What i mean by 4k on one screen is same as the 4k on another in terms of resource load. Any screen you can buy right now that are 4k, you really dont need extra eye candy like AA anyways. And pretty much every GPU you can buy right now, cannot run a 4k game maxed out with AA with a single card anyways, so users typically opt to not use AA at all.

Honestly IMO is pretty stupid to have a 4k screen on a laptop ran by a 960m GPU in general.

Not really. All you guys think about is gaming. I would love to have this laptop. I would use it at 1080p for all normal use and gaming. Only when I would want to watch a movie I would turn it to 4K. I bet a 4K movie runs well and looks awesome on this thing. And I bet that 1080p looks better on that 4K IPS panel than 1080p on a native 1080p TN panel...

"Asus Repulic of Gamers"
"gaming laptop"

It's fine as a regular ultra thin laptop at 4K but it shouldn't be called what Asus is calling it. It's misleading at best to the unaware consumer.

If you don't know how to change the resolution on your display you are not a gamer...

You miss my point. A 4K gaming laptop is not a 4K gaming laptop if you have to change the resolution to 1080p to play games. Even 1080p is pushing it with a GTX 960M in some games. Remember that this GPU is even slower than a desktop GTX 750 Ti. It hasn't got a prayer at 4K. It's a nice laptop for watching movies but it's not deserving of the title Republic of Gamers 4K gaming laptop imo.

lol You make it sound like it's a title bestowed by the Pope himself. :D RoG stuff was never something special man, just dumb bright red branding by Asus. Still this is a nice laptop, you cannot have a better GPU and keep the laptop as thin as it is at the moment...

Well, at least we can agree on two things. This is a nice laptop and it's a "4K gaming laptop" that's good for everything but gaming at 4K. :)

4K IPS on a 15.6 incher screen with a GTX960M is just too much... even if it has 4GB of VRAM. The whole term "gaming laptop" is becoming a problem with all these gimmicks. Even the GTX980M is struggling handling 4K gaming on Medium settings. ==

Well I agree about the labeling part; get rid of them all and just list specs! However bottom line is that they can call it anything short of Republic of Pedophiles and I wouldn't really care. What matters is how well it fits into my needs and situations.
