New Xbox 360 revealed

Codenamed Zephyr, Engadget seems to have gotten an early look at the revised version of the Xbox 360. One of the main improvements being anticipated is a 65nm processor, which should tackle heat issues, but it now appears that it is likely to feature a HDMI port and 120GB hard drive. This should allow the Xbox 360 to output high definition 1080p pictures, one of its criticisms, although the 120GB drive may simply be released at the same time rather than being part of the package. There is no pricing information yet but it is likely to be more or less the same - we can expect to get these upgrades "soon" according to an Xbox insider.

Azn Tr14dZWhere can you check your Ping?
Easist way to check your ping is to click start, go to "Run...", type in "cmd" and when the command prompt opens type (without quotes) "ping [your router's IP address]". The IP address normally depends on the make... it should be the address you type in to change your router settings, or you DNS server (probably the same). If you type "ping -n 100 [IP address]" then it will run a ping 100 times so you can see if any of them fail or are very high. You could even run a ping test to techPowerUp! but that would test your internet as oppose to your wireless LAN.

Wow, I just noticed that if I'm to use my Xbox 360 using VGA, my HTPC won't have a connection to the HDTV, so I can't set it up. Aghh, I'll just use 1080i and Component for now (which still isn't bad) and bridge the connections. Then when/if Microsoft releases HDMI Cables for the Original Xbox 360, then I'll just use that. But for now, just Component I guess.

Awesome, but I think people who bought the original xbox 360 should get an extreme discount for this new one.

Yeh ATI should have given me an extreme discount on the X1900 when it came out only 2 months after the x1800 came out.   :banghead:

There is no "original" xbox 360. You are going to be able to play all the same games, at all the same performance levels, with all the same features.

Not necessarily the same features since the "New" Xbox 360 w/ HDMI can support 1080p (which currrent owners are having trouble w/ VGA and Component) and also the future 1440p.

Yeh and the majority of XBOX360 owners don't even own an HDTV to begin with. Not only that, the majority of all HDTV owners believe they are watching a HighDefinition, when in fact they are not, and don't even subscribe to HD Television!

This is so blown out of proportion it's not even funny.

Still, don't say "all the same features" when it's not. And many people will switch to HDTV's soon anyway...

HDMI is not required to get the same gaming experience, end of story.

Azn Tr14dZYup, but they're 2.5" Laptop hard drives, not the 3.5".

And DarkSaber, check this:

Wow, I can't believe this happened. I need that HDMI Cable since my HDTV won't support 1080p through component (but haven't tried VGA). I should have just waited for this, now I'm pissed. I can't view 1080p! And I was supposed to buy the HD-DVD Add-On.
Yea I know of the transfer kit...it sells for 90€ at our local store :D...

Oh that is the reason why I do not care bout HDMI: I am running 1080p with VGA cable on my Dell 24 inch...works flawlessly!

cheers

It's not end of story, many Xbox 360 owners cannot enjoy Full 1080p since the current Xbox 360 only supports VGA and HDMI. What was the point of the update for 1080p if it simply can't be used? HDMI is not required, but many need and want it for 1080p. You're the one who stated that they have the "same features" when they simply don't.

How does 1080i NOT give you the same image as 1080p. Stop acting like they are ANY different. 1080i @ 60hz is the SAME EXACT IMAGE as 1080p @ 30hz. Any HDTV on the face of the planet will do proper deinterlacing to 1080p. If you happen to be an owner of the dying breed of CRT HDTV's - that just happen to support 1080p input , well then I guess you have a valid complaint.

This is as bad as the retarded argument that HD-DVD was somehow inferior, because the first gen players "only" could output 1080i. MOST TVS DON'T EVEN ACCEPT 1080P. AT ALL. There are a very very small handful.

What TV do you have that you need to complain about this?

VGA:

* HD DVD - 1080p resolution and all others
* DVD - Upscaled as high as 1080p resolution and all others
* Games - 720p games upscaled to 1080p, also supports native-1080p games in the future

Component:

* HD DVD - 1080i resolution maximum, limited by AACS
* DVD - Upscaled to 480p maximum, limited by CSS
* Games - 720p games upscaled to 1080p, also supports native-1080p games in the future

Have you ever actually dealt with HDMI handshaking issues with a variety of equipment? Can you imagine the average dumbass consumer that doesn't even know wtf HDMI is, let alone how to deal with an issue that arises?

First of all, 1080i cannot be 60Hz, because 1080i is 1920x1080 @ 30Hz, making it Interlaced. 1080p is 1920x1080 @ 60Hz, and it refreshes twice as much as 1080i, therefore delivering a faster picture that doesn't stutter compared to 1080i. That's why 720p was better for gaming over 1080i because it isn't interlaced, but now we have 1080p. I guess you know nothing about the resolutions and refresh rates of 1080i and 1080p.

And some people like me need HDMI since my VGA is already taken up by my HTPC. Some other HDTV's as well, like Sony's XBR line, won't accept 1080p through Component or VGA, but only HDMI, so others will not be able to view 1080p, only 1080i. And in the future, you will not be able to view HD DVD's in Analog such as Component. Yeah you can view 1080p through component, but only a few HDTV's can handle 1080p through component, and only games can be viewed through component 1080p, but not HD-DVDs.

And for the future, only HDMI (1.3) will be able to view 1440p and higher!

You don't have an idea because there are some large 30" PC Monitors that can handle 2560x1600, much higher resolution that any other HDTV out there, and they look absolutely stunning compared to 1080p.

Oh , so the source magically becomes 2560x1600????? That 30" LCD panel now has to scale the 1080p image and no longer is it 1:1 pixel mapping = poor quality. Don't even argue that some 30" Dell LCD panel is going to hold a candle against a Sony Qualia or SXRD panel, or their Ruby SXRD projector, or something like a Runco DLP projector. Watching HD on something that small is pointless in the first place - you may as well just get a nice external scaler and run normal DVD on it.

I think you better spend more time reviewing what it actually means to interlace an image, then arguing with me. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1080i

1080i is at 50/60hz because it is only sending half the resolution , at twice the speed giving the illusion of a full image.

I'd love for you to show me ANY TYPE of broadcast or tv that allows 1080p @ 60hz.

You're going to be limited to 24/30/60fps at 720p and 24(movie) / 30fps at 1080i/1080p. That's the end of it.

YOU ARE NOT GOING TO BE PLAYING GAMES AT 1080P AT 60 FPS. THIS IS NOT A COMPUTER MONITOR WITH HIGH RESOLUTION AND HIGH REFRESH RATE.

Ok, you win on that. I'll give you props on that. You win that arguement.

But you keep asking why people are getting mad at Microsoft for releasing an Xbox 360 w/ HDMI, when we don't need it at all to enjoy a fun gaming experience. Well, some of us really need HDMI. And I answered why we need it:

If you absolutely needed HDMI then why did you buy the XBOX360 is the first place. You knew ahead of time that it was Component only. The chances of that protection flag EVER being implemented on future HD-DVD is slim to none. Many publishers have already stated that it's just not even worth it. Last I checked the studios and CE manufacturers reach an agreement not to implement that flag until around 2010-12. By that time you won't even be using your XBOX360 , let alone the HDDVD addon.

Enjoy your XBOX360 like you have been for over a year and relax.

People are blowing it out of proportion. It's just another revision to a piece of consumer electronics. Just like every other piece of electronics equipment gets revisions. They are moving to a small die size to reduce costs, and increase production. This is only good for the consumer.

i still say it looks better on my 21" ws monitor than it does on any hdtv ive seen especially when comparing color accuracy and contrast wise not to mention it runs at 1920x1080@60Hz 1:1. So considering i don't have room for a big ass tv and my display serves dual purpose as my computer monitor price VS performance i dare you to find something better

very true tho if you have don't have a ws monitor that supports 1920x1080 it does look pretty bad like on one of those 30 inch displays because then the display has to stretch the pixels and winds up skewing the aspect ratio

By 2010 there will be infinitely better HD-DVD players then today current Gen1/Gen2. Much cheaper, much faster with many more features. Point is, it's not something to worry about at all.
