Apacer Intros the PT920 Commando PCIe NVMe SSD

Apacer introduced the PT920 Commando, a PCI-Express SSD built in the add-on card form-factor, with PCI-Express 3.0 x4 host interface. The drive is characterized by a plastic shroud shaped like the top of an M4 or M16 assault rifle. Available in 240 GB and 480 GB capacities, the drive takes advantage of the NVMe 1.2 protocol. The company didn't reveal controller or NAND flash manufacturers.

The drives offer sequential reads of up to 2,500 MB/s, with up to 1,300 MB/s sequential writes for the 480 GB model, and up to 860 MB/s sequential writes for the 240 GB model. 4K random write performance is rated at up to 175,000 IOPS for the 480 GB model, and up to 160,000 IOPS for the 240 GB model. The drive feature most common SSD features such as ECC, NCQ, and TRIM. The company didn't reveal pricing, although it backs the drives with 3-year warranties.

I like that this SSD looks unique and interesting, but it really does look like the stapler I first thought it was. Perhaps more detail would make it look like what it's supposed to be modeled after.

I hope we'll see more different NVMe SSDs in the future.

Th3pwn3rIt is fast as F though.
Not really, if the numbers posted are accurate, it is marginal at best...especially for an nvme/m2 drive....

We need to see some real-world performance tests to be sure though.....

So what do you recommend then? Seems a lot faster than the Samsung 500gb Evo drive I have in my machines unless I'm mixing up my numbers...could be I'm having a brain fart.

The fastest NVMe SSD so far is the Samsung 960 Pro with 3500/2100 sequential reads/writes and 440,000/360,000 r/w iops, with the 960 Evo close behind (3200/1900, 380,000/360,000).

That's my recommendation too....the numbers don't lie, and I know that to be true because I have 2 of the 960pros in my rig, and it screeeems...

can you RAID NVMe SSds? How about 2xPCI-Express ones. And still boot from them.

Yes you can but there is no noticeable speed increase from it, at least not With the 1Tb and 480GB units. Maybe the 256GB would be a tiny bit faster...

Been there done that, just not worth the time or effort to set it up IMHO ...

yes but only niche cases benefit. It's also rea;;y annoying to do for boot.
