AMD Begins Offering Wraith Max Cooler Through Retail Channels - $59

AMD has announced full and immediate retail availability of their Wraith Max cooler through retail channels. The 140 W TDP Wraith Max cooler was previously only available through a bundle with AMD's top of the line Ryzen 7 1700X and 1800X. However, through popular demand, AMD have decided to make that cooler available solo. Ease of installation through AMD's Spring-Screw mechanism, jolly good looks, LED lighting, relatively silent performance (38 dBa) and respectable performance seem to have been enough to convince AMD users.

The Wraith Max cooler is compatible with AMD AM4, AM3+, and FM2 motherboards. The RGB ring's color can be customized through a myriad of RGB control apps from various manufacturers, such as Asus' Aura Sync, Gigabyte's RGB Fusion, MSI's Mystic Light, Biostar's Vivid LED DJ, and ASRock's RGB LED tools. AMD also offers the AMD Wraith Max RGB lighting control software (powered by Cooler Master) as a free download. The Wraith Max comes with both a USB header cable and an RGB LED header to control the lighting feature. A copper base plate and heatpipes, along with pre-applied thermal paste and a 92mm Cooler Master fan. The down-blowing fan also provides an extra bit of cooling for the socket area and VRMs. Perhaps the $59 price-tag will turn some prospective buyers off, but still, this remains the best stock cooler option in the market, and for someone who wants to keep an AMD cooling identity, is the best available option.

noname00I don't understand one thing: why is the Wraith Max (the best one) using the plastic mounting bracket that comes with the motherboard, but Stealth and Spire are screwed in?
Basically the best CPU cooler from AMD uses the worst mounting system.
I guess you haven't tried to install the screw in ones then? Or rather, remove them. I foolishly put mine on, as I couldn't find the mounting kit for my AIO at the time. Removing the Spire cooler was hell, as it got stuck somehow to the rear CPU bracket and wouldn't unscrew the entire way. I had to pry it off in the end, something you really don't want to do, as you could damage the motherboard. So no, the screw mount coolers don't have the best mount, in fact, it's utter crap.

I am completely confused how this could happen. I have removed mine a couple of times and I have no idea how it could get hung on anything.

That is a really good question. The screws just didn't come out of the screw sockets on the CPU bracket that came with my Asus board. I mean, there were some early reports about some CPU brackets not being done right, or maybe I was just unlucky, but It really struggled to get it off.

ironwolfAbout every 4 months or so I have someone come in with a broken AMD bracket. Most were from them moving the system but a few just broke while sitting on the desk/floor. If someone brings in one to scrap that has a good bracket I make sure to yank it out.
Pictures with timestamp or it didn't happen. I get the sense you're talking BS

Are these any different than the old Foxconn heatpipe coolers AMD bundled with their old Opteron processors back in the sockete 939 days just with a different fan and lights?

Yes these are much more robust. Larger overall with thicker heatpipes.

Indeed, I am totally making this all up to troll everyone here. *chuckle* Next time it happens, you'll be the first to get the timestamped picture. Promise!

Hopefully AMD can start selling CPU's without coolers again soon... You know to keep the CPU/Cooler ratio balanced. Totally important!! :peace:

It's happened to me a couple times going from s754 up to AM3. Sometimes you run into a bracket that is just brittle.. Threads can get stuck bind, just light pressure in the wrong spot can cause it to break. Not totally common though.

So the difference between this Wraith Max and just the original Wraith cooler is RGB is that correct?

The Wraith rev.1 was kinda crap(smaller overall, fewer and lower diameter pipes, etc.) and no one really likes to talk about it but stil can be found being sold for $20

OTOH Rev.2 the current Wraith there are now 3 versions of:

Wraith "Basic" w/ no LED and no shroud over the fan - can be found for $18-20US(originally released socket AM2+/AM3?)
Wraith "Standard" w/ Shroud and White LED - can be found for $30-35US(released on socket AM3)
Wraith Max w/ Shroud and RGB LEDS - See article(AM4)

As you can see the the Wraith Spire/Stealth weren't originally Wraith coolers but I guess someone at AMD decided whytf not and slapped wraith on them also ignoring the 3 previous iterations of the Wraith cooler making it confusing/convoluted with 3 coolers sharing the same name and others very similar to one another. Should have named those two new entries to the lineup simply Spire(rgb) and Spire Stealth (non-rgb).

silentbogo$59? You can buy a decent AIO for that kind of money...
Not everyone still likes AIO's.

Just sayin...

And still reminds me of those heatpipe stock coolers which were shipped since dual core S939 AMD CPUs.

20eur would be the max (pun intended) which this is worth of.
