Windows XP to live on
Microsoft has decided to bow to pressure from users and give Windows XP Home Edition an extension on its lifetime, giving users at least an extra year of support. Microsoft had originally planned to end free support in January 2009, but the company's Japanese president has said that "It will be significantly extended," continuing "When I say significantly, it's more than 1 year." An official announcement is expected on Thursday, but this means users should be secure with Windows XP up until 2010, possibly for longer.

How much more is OSX giving me for $130 every 12 months? 5 releases in 6 years?
Yes, I have tried Vista, and it looks OK, but I'm not reasy to give up XP yet!! I will probably skip XP and go to the next version after that!(If I live that long)!!:toast:
I'd imagine the majority are shop bought, or company supplied and shipped with the OS of the day, i.e. the most current MS OS. Therefore at the peak of any OS product lifecycle, it will be have the biggest share of the market and therefore require the biggest share of support.
Regardless of how the modding/techy market embrace Vista, every shop bought PC will have Vista from this year on, so it wont be long before its the dominant OS.
Good work on this MS, its a good gesture, but lets be honest by 2010 the cost to them of supporting XP will be negligible*, as whilst it will probably still be the 2nd biggest OS it will be tiny in comparison to Vista.
*negligible in terms o Bills Bank account, not ours
please stay objective. I do not see any reason for any deletion yet. Yes it is not the best and openminded discussion ever, but nothing bad yet.
Keep in mind, to check you egos at the door. If someone posts a point that opposes yours, no need to take it personal. That is the way discissions are done..
cheers
