Microsoft Rolls Out Windows 10 April 2018 Update (build 1803)

Microsoft began rolling out Windows 10 April 2018 Update. This isn't an ordinary "patch Tuesday" update, but a major update akin to "Fall Creators Update," which updates the build of the operating system to 1803. With it, Microsoft is introducing four major features to Windows 10 - Timeline, Focus Assist, Dictation, and a new and improved Edge web-browser. Timeline is essentially a time-linked file manager that organizes your files (and versions of them), e-mails, web-browser favorites, and search results, by time, so you can go back up to 30 days in time to find your stuff.

Focus Assist is a feature that lets you keep your focus on work (or productive tasks), and prevents you from being sucked into endless scrolling through social-media or other trivial activity, when you're supposed to be working. You set it to turn on in specific times of the day and days of the week, or even arbitrarily, and it keeps giving you visual or auditory reminders that pull you away from your trivial activity. The third major feature is Dictation, which is natural voice input as somewhat grammatically correct text. Microsoft made improvements to Edge that include the ability to mute tabs, maximize Reading Mode or PDFs into full-screen, secure payment options storage, and in-built Grammar Tools besides spell-checkers, so you no longer need to pay for services such as Grammarly.

The disc image is available from Microsoft directly at this address.

When using a Windows machine it will prompt you to install the Microsoft Disc Image Download Tool. If you rather have a direct download of the Windows 10 ISO you have to change your browser's user agent, so that the site thinks you are on an unsupported OS.

Chrome: Go to the page above, press F12, in the devtools window, top right, click the three dots, select "More tools", "Network conditions", User agent: Blackberry.
Firefox: Install a user agent switcher addon, then switch to the user agent to a non-Windows platform.
Edge: Go to the page above, press F12, in the devtools window, select "Emulation", "Device", "iPad".

Fall Creator broke my Win10 so bad that the OS actually failed and couldn't be repaired. Hopefully this one doesn't do anything stupid like that.

I rather have win 8.1 than win 10. I like 8.1 with a windows 7 shell.

Make sure to turn a bunch of options off. After the update I got some options flipped on "automatically" For example. Cortana.

Added some info on how to get a direct ISO download from Microsoft

Edit:

How nice, the personalized advertising privacy setting is hidden behind the scrollbar. They sure could have designed the UI so that the option is partially visible on default scroll state

No problems here, so far... except, seems they made the Edge Favorites Bar icons show the name and icon. Cannot seem to find the option to hide the names on all the icons at once... ended up doing it one at a time.

I dual boot the new Ubuntu 18.04 and win 8.1 WSUS offline edition. i love it, best decision of my life. win 10 is a bloated whale.

And I was wondering why for the past week I wasn't able to install Russian Language Pack on top of my EN distro... They've changed some links in update distribution and now additional features are installed through MS Store, just like android. 1803 came along and LPs are available once again.

I do like the small changes to the interface - looks a lot cleaner and more compact. Though, MS is still trying to force their Edge browser on users...:banghead:

With this update Microsoft also introduces a Local disK (E:) of 449 MB in size, which has not been talked by any news outlet, presumably to store your activities for Timeline tab into it.

This is in case of new installation, right? As it has been since beginning of W10. And the scrollbar is less hidden :D
After an upgrade there are individual pages asking about each of these, with no scrollbars this time. So at least there is some progress on that front.

Update went pretty smooth on my gaming rig. No need to re-set all privacy options and so on. Had to reinstall Nvidia driver and Corsair CUE though. Not a biggie.

The only annoying thing I found today is some stupid anti-blurry UI function which minimized Quake every time I click on something in the lobby. Couldn't disable it from the notification area, so I had to go to settings and disable this shit manually...

In fairness I'm glad they actually delayed it until they could get the bugs sorted.

Compare that to anniversary update that not only launched with system crashing bugs for some systems but became a mandatory update before they were addressed.

Besides putting back the annoying shortcut arrows back on my desktop(thank you UWT for fixing that) and it switching my sound card from speakers to headphones it went fine. It let me turn the off the extra nosy stuff on startup.

We shall see what this update does internally. I really do not care for features more for whats new under the hood. Every edition allways installs some wierd game or crap no one wants. Like the first update to orginial I called it the Candy Krush edition because it install that stupid game without asking if I wanted it. Fall edition I called disney makeover edition.

Nice Download speed try mine.

''Microsoft began rolling out Windows 10 April 2018 Update. This isn't an ordinary "patch Tuesday" update, but a major update akin to "Fall Creators Update," which updates the build of the operating system to 1803''

operating system ? NO its a service not a OS . even Microsoft calls it a service .

pretty sad Microsoft offered it for free and still had to use underhanded tactics and strong arm tactics to ''trick '' folks in to the upgrade [that should of been your first clue to stay away] and then like said above they seem to want to fill it up with all that crapware bloat then improve the ''OS'' part of things . if anything the ''OS'' part is more degraded . just ask cortana ..lol...

hay Microsoft just offer a solid real OS and if we want all that crapware make it a optional download . then now with there roll over updating [that's you now roll over and take them up the a$$] that you take them all or take nothing then after so many days you have to take them

see they learned with trying to release windows 10 real fast to get rid of you selecting the updates you want and decline the ones you don't and are now able to slip anything in good or for bad .

lets face it if it was not for microsofts strangle hold on the PC games you would have no real reason to even use it . Linux can do the rest just as good and 98.9% is free to use . I just keep a copy of 7 .vista and xp each on ther own on a HD just for gaming use don't even allow it to update or go on line unless necessary , and that's rare . heck I did not even let them activate . install all programs off the retail disks or pendrives . use Linux for the rest of the days workings .

windows is a bloated joke anymore think how back in the XP days how folks whined how proprietary and intrusive it was , man xp now seems open source compared to 10 as a service
