R600 pictured

As you will know from our previous news posts, at an event in San Francisco, AMD demonstrated some R600 cards. ZDNet's David Berlind has managed to snap a good selection of pictures of one of these cards:

More images can be found here.

A few weeks ago, sources close to AMD revealed to us that the retail versions of the card are expected to be much smaller than the prototype card AMD has already displayed. Looking at the reverse side of the prototype card, it's apparent that the PCB is much shorter than the humongous cooling solution and thus there is the prospect for retail R600-based graphics cards to be much shorter.

This indicates that the R600 is well under way, with a few working samples in existence. AMD/ATI needs to sort out the cooler, and then the card should hopefully be ready for launch in May.

What annoys me is that, when we first saw 8800 cards, there was what, less than a month between the actual release and the pictures.

But no.. we have to wait until may.. bah

The fan makes it look longer than it actually is. If you look at the distance between the end of the card and the end of the PCI-E pins it isn't horribly long. It looks about as long as my 6800GS.

people are like why aren't they releasing the card until may, honestly..if YOU got a card that was about 14 inch's long...and couldn't fit in your case and you'd probably have to do some crazy case modding to fit it, i doubt you'd be happy after spending the price that beast is gonna cost :P

people should be more patient, good things come out of stuff like this, this could be ATI's one up against nvidia and there being as strategic as possible

To infinity ... and beyond!
imo, i would rather wait a couple extra months for it than it be rushed it to production, that way ati/amd can get this thing perfect before the initial launch

Right now, Im just happy to see it exists. Albeit, that damn prototype is huge. I dont think my Antec Nine Hundred can hold that card. Benchmarks will come with the retail version. But honestly, you folks and your benchies need to calm down.

I think this version is for those scientists who need to do stream processing-rather than a room of PCs just buy two barcelonas and two R600s =D

Our version will use water cooling (w0000000t) that is pre-installed.

that card is actually the OEM version which will not be available to you and me, we get a version with teh fan on top of the GPU as usual, which is infact afaik shorter than current high end grpahics cards from both ATI and Nvidia.
