Intel Confirms Iris Xe MAX Brand for Company's Next-Gen Discrete Graphics

Intel in its Q3-2020 earnings release unveiled the Iris Xe MAX brand under which it will launch its first discrete GPUs in over two decades. The company also disclosed that it has started shipping the product (i.e. commenced mass production and started shipping volumes to its partners). The first Iris Xe MAX discrete GPU is expected to be based on the Xe LP architecture, and we expect it to target the mobile market, as the likes of ASUS has already developed ultraportables featuring the discrete GPU. Intel unveiled a proof-of-concept of an asymmetric explicit multi-GPU technology which could see the Iris Xe iGPU of the 11th Gen Core "Tiger Lake" processor work in tandem with a discrete GPU based on the same architecture, which is now turning out to be the Iris Xe MAX. We expect the Iris Xe MAX to make life miserable to entry-level mobile dGPUs from NVIDIA and AMD.

Godspeed Intel, few things would fit better into this weird year than a competitive Intel graphics card.

Personally, I expect DG1 to compete with GTX 1650(ti) mobile, hopefully it will also compete in 75W desktop gpu segment.

BTW is there any word on asymmetric explicit multi-GPU desktop support?

Why? DG1 is around 30% slower by spec already.

Such comparison doesn't make sense unless you know DG1 uses exact same architecture as nVidia's counterpart.

Ok, Intel, now let's see it! Quit TALKING about it and actually SHOW it!

tiggerWonder how long till there is a desktop version?
Um, that's all we're talking about, thus "discrete" GPU.

The first Iris Xe MAX discrete GPU is expected to be based on the Xe LP architecture, and we expect it to target the >mobile market<. no mention of the desktop release. hence my post. Also, i did not mean a CPU with a Xe package, i meant a actual PCIe card with Xe on it.

Same here. Mobile models might be interesting, but I want to see desktop offerings.

From what i have seen, the mobile models are 15w, no where near a comparison to desktop GPU's at all. who knows what a desktop variant would use power wise.

Hopefully they will bring something competitive to the market which will give AMD & NVidia a run for their money.

My expectations are now so low that I genuinely hope Intel can surprise me.

We sorely need competition in the GPU space, the pretend competition that AMD and Nvidia are having isn't actually good for consumers. Beyond $150 for an 8GB RX570, there's very little that's actually a reasonable upgrade without sacrificing a serious amount of performance/$. GTX 1060 owners are still wondering what's supposed to be a meaningful upgrade to their $240 purchase from almost four years ago.

I disagree. But even if true, it still looks fresh and new.

I agree actually, but I have serious 90s nostalgia, so it flies with me.

Yep, when all our games on console were at NTSC/PAL res, but the blur added a kind of AA to it so you did not care... lol
