Synology Announces DiskStation DS1522+ 5-Bay NAS

Synology today announced the new 5-bay Synology DiskStation DS1522+, the latest compact solution in its Plus line of all-in-one storage devices. It assists users of all sizes to protect data, IT infrastructure, and physical assets professionally and securely while supporting a host of business, IT administration, and productivity applications.

"DS1522+ is a versatile solution fit for a wide range of usage needs and environments," said Peggy Weng, product manager at Synology Inc. "The new 10GbE upgrade option plus scalability for 10 additional drives makes the DS1522+ cost-effective and a solution that can easily grow with any team."
Compact solution, boundless possibilities

DS1522+ integrates thoroughly as the primary storage solution for smaller setups or as an edge node for multi-site deployments. Powered by DiskStation Manager (DSM) 7.1, it features robust data management capabilities, comprehensive file sharing, collaboration, and video surveillance capabilities.

Scalable up to 15 drive bays with two DX517 expansion units, a fully expanded DS1522+ can reliably host massive amounts of data while taking up minimal desktop or shelf space. A new network upgrade slot enables anytime 10GbE upgrades, while two built-in M.2 2280 NVMe slots can be used to speed up storage performance significantly.

Beyond file storage

Synology storage systems can easily be configured to become a cross-platform private cloud while still giving users complete control over their data. Synology Drive enables intuitive file management and synchronization between platforms like Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS, ensuring users' data is accessible no matter where they are.

Synology Photos enables hobby photographers looking to manage their growing collection to quickly pull and back up media from their phones, sort and organize pictures, and make them easily shareable with robust permissions control.

Keep businesses running

Keeping business endpoints, emails, and critical data secured and backed up is more necessary than ever with continuous and emerging cybersecurity threats. The DS1522+, once set up, will automatically conduct data backup, snapshot, and replication automation to ensure files and LUNs stored on it can be backed up to other devices including cloud services.

Synology's Active Backup Suite allows IT infrastructure, such as Windows systems, Hyper-V/VMware VMs, and Microsoft 365/Google Workspace accounts, to be safely backed up onto the DS1522+ and easily restored when needed.

Compact surveillance and application server

The DS1522+ also functions as a full-fledged video management system that provides full local data ownership. Synology's Surveillance Station is a powerful VMS designed for businesses and is already implemented and protecting over 500,000 sites. Flexible ONVIF support and more than 8,300 validated IP cameras make deployment simple and easily suited to each location's requirements.

Surveillance Station makes it easy to set up and manage up to 40 cameras on the DS1522+ with a modern and customizable interface. For larger or multiple building environments, add in floor plans and overlay Google Maps or OpenStreetMap for maximum situational awareness. Retain important footage and increase resiliency with support for backup recording servers, multi-device management (Central Management System), and even support for end-to-end encrypted, simultaneous dual recording to C2 Surveillance.

Availability & Pricing

The Synology DS1522+ is available starting today through Synology partners and resellers at an MSRP of 699.99 USD.

Are those 1Gbps ports on back? In which case its meh given competition is offering 2.5Gbps ports for their NAS as standard. Also do those ports work as a switch?

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. Synology is really starting to fall behind the curve when it comes to the hardware.

I always liked more Synology OS instead of QNAP but when I had to choose for my latest NAS I "had to" go for Qnap, Synology x20+ series before and now x22+ has no 2.5Gbit ports..... it was not ok in 2021 and even more now in 2022.
I know you can add an expansion card to easily reach 10Gbit but considering how much these devices cost nowadays it's really unacceptable for me.

Yeah, Synology has always had a nice, clean UI, not sure how the underlying software is, but both companies seem to have had their fair share of security holes and bugs over the years.
When even Asustor is doing 2.5 Gbps as standard on pretty much all their models, you'd think Synology would have figured out they need to stay competitive, but alas...

This is the 10GbE adapter, and it's not cheap. Maybe Synology allows an Ethernet adapter to be connected to the rear USB 3.0 port. That wouldn't be a surprise as USB-to-WLAN adapters have been supported for a long time.

Github has some options for adding in 5GbE USB adapters, which Synology never appreciated given they locked down USB adapter options with DSM 7.x (e.g. no LAN, DAC, etc.).

The Syno adapter is also proprietary, whereas before you could add in your own PCIe NIC, including SFP+ options. Mind you the add-in card wasn't available as an option on products this low in the stack before, but at this level they should have just added 2.5GbE and called it a day. And, the add-in -- proper LP -- PCIe card should have stayed with higher end consumer models.

Look, I get they're a company and its about profit. But putting genies back in bottles makes tech companies look bad. And in the NAS realm there is ample competition. Syno is leaning on the strength of DSM to keep consumers and many SBs in its orbit in the non-enterprise segments. But there's only so much BS people will put up with. And heaven help them when someone provides a comparable software solution.

It's mind boggling Syno is happy to sacrifice mind share and/or market share on the consumer side for more SB business where they are already strong. The lack of 2.5GbE is at least particularly tone deaf when pilored by not just fourm types but universally by reviewers for years -- definitely since the 20+ series.

Bah! Looks like you're right. Stupid Synology. But USB Ethernet adapters aren't even on the EOL list. Did Synology have support for those before DSM 7?

I have a DS 718+ with DSM 7 and get 415Mbps using a USB 3.0 Type-C to 5GbE Adapter (QNA-UC5G1T) by QNAP

Getting Qnap (QNA-UC5G1T) working on Synology.

For DSM7 pick correct driver

Release 2.15.0-7 DSM7.x · bb-qq/r8152 · GitHub
Release 1.3.3.0-5 DSM-7.0 · bb-qq/aqc111 · GitHub

If your running DSM 7
  • The installation will fail the first time. After that, run the following command from the SSH terminal:
    sudo install -m 4755 -o root -D /var/packages/aqc111/target/aqc111/spk_su /opt/sbin/spk_su
  • after that you will have a 5gbe connection using 5GbE Adapter (QNA-UC5G1T) by QNAP
  • If your still on DSM6 use these drivers
  • Realtek based USB3-2.5Gbps: github.com/bb-qq/r8152
    Aquantia AQC11U based USB3-5Gbps (QNAP QNA-UC5G1T): github.com/bb-qq/aqc111

I have that same QNAP USB NIC. Irony aside, what I was getting at but didn't clarify, it did take a touch for the community to make the DSM 7 solution happen for LAN adapters. In any case, Synology has pushed users like us to deploy these things when they could have simply made access part of the plan and put out some product themselves... all that time ago no less.

Did they work? Yes. Did Synology provide a full-throated show of official support? 'T'was always thus'. ;-)

What's with Synology and their weak cpu offerings? Every new device comes with an old and slow cpu. Heck even their pro devices come with a d1541 even in 2022! Love their software but it sucks that the cpu are so underpowered.

That's another reason why I choose Qnap, the one I got has a V1500B (AMD) CPU, price was pretty similar to same Synology's product.
