Valve hacked

MaddoxX, a member of the No-Steam forums, has managed quite a feat; he has hacked into Valve's computers. He has managed to get access to Cyber Cafe data, as well as several hundreds of credit card numbers, and Valve's balance sheet.

At the moment, he is awaiting some response from Valve, which does not seem to be too concerned.

lol, what a loser. If you're going to hack someone, at least do something cool - like steal a version of Episode 2 and get some screens. Valve uses Steam in the first place because people like this guy pirate incredible software worthy of paying full retail price. They have a right to protect their assets. If using Steam means that we'll see more quality products from Valve, I have absolutely no problem with it. I bet this crybaby's pissed that he's getting no attention from Valve.

1. Why does he feel he must devote so much energy towards hating Valve? As Einstein put it so well (the moral of which applies here):

"Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius -- and a lot of courage -- to move in the opposite direction."

2. What makes him believe he should distribute the personal information he obtained? What is the purpose of causing so much distress and hurt for so many people?

3. He needs to get laid.. REALLY badly ;)

this is not cool, i don't have any games that i downloaded from steam, but he could mess with like accounts and everything...why do they care? it's just an interface to bring games together, and it's not even that intensive of a program.

Exactly, I am actually impressed with his honesty, he's showing his cards, he's admitted to hacking into their database and that he has obtained personal information. If anything, he could help Valve to make steam more secure.

I used no-steam long time ago when the team of haxzor where known as Empero (dunno if they still go by that)...

No-Steam work fantastically (can play on all servers), get all the games without a hitch. But one day steam used some new time-stamp system and screwed up everything. But the team still made virtual steam emulators that allows you to get on, but you can only play on cracked servers, but single player works fine.

I was sad when they changed the system. But now i own almost all valve made game. 250+ bucks to valves 9million dolor bank account ;)

I have no-steam CS:1.6 only because:

1. Its got bots
2. Test skins/sprays before i put it in the normal CS1.6
3. Training, verse Expert bots
4. Map testing
5. Chill off from fucking hackers that appear every morning.

Oh I have no doubts valve is throwing a hissy fit over this.

This is gonna cost them big time.

And to all those yelling GET A LIFE NERD

Theres uaually a lot more politics behind something like this rather than whats reported by the news.

And the fact he obtained not an insecure area of ZOMG EPISODE 2?!! rather, FINANCIAL data.... shows a lot more than you think. (By not wasting his time, he has shown he's 100% serious. any script kiddie would just get game data that would mean NOTHING, and is easily leaked by dev's.)

If an episode 2 ss is leaked, boohoo. Financial data can be a HUGE financial liability when being hacked, and this publicly known is a hit on valves poor rep as it is, not to mention legal issues.

I could care less about some dork trying to get famous by stealing a few credit card numbers and a financial statement.

Why do you hate Valve just because they're protecting themselves from piracy/theft? Half-Life was a revolution to FPS games, and HL2 is #1 rated PC game on IGN. Valve is a very respectable company devoted to quality, and they deserve the right to protect themselves from cheap-asses with no jobs.

I said if you're going to hack Valve, steal something cool, like Episode 2 - you'd get more positive respect from the gaming community.

theres nothing funny nor cool about stealing credit card info. instead of hurting valve he's picking on some poor bastard who has to work 40 hrs a week to pay his bills. no he's just being a total jerk who really should be thrown in prison for the financial (and emotional as an effect) damage he's done to the people who own those credit cards. they did nothing to him, yet he saw no moral pause in stealing the info. He should get 10+ years in prison due to the fact that he just gained access to large amounts of money instantly and can create new credit accounts based off the info he obtained. quite frankly i'd deck the dude if I ever met him.

Edit: seems to have been resolved, article has italic statment at the bottom.

"There has been no security breach of Steam. The alleged hacker gained access to a third-party site that Valve uses to manage the commercial partners in its Cyber Café program. This Cyber Café billing system is not connected to Steam. We are working with law enforcement agencies on this matter, and encourage anyone with more information to e-mail us at Catch_A_Thief@valvesoftware.com."

and the anti steam site seems to be down as well.

This just goes to show how little valve care for their consumer's privacy and a relative lack of security on their part to conceal their customer's details, I'm GLAD Maddox has done something this useful but hope he leaves those teetering on a financial knife-edge, i.e. CC owners, alone.

Valve have NEVER replied to ANY of my emails regarding non-functional products so I'm happy they have to spend time doing something other than raking in cash for selling non-physical items... When are bloody Portal and HL2 Ep'2 out eh???

Oddly enough, there is a business side to things.

and I'm highly doubting about the "respect" he wants from the "gaming community" for leaking episode 2.

"steal something cool" or "steal something that hurts".

I also love how everyone assumes "go get out of your basement you lifeless nerd" when he's probably got much more of a life outside of VIDEO GAMES than most people here do.

You don't learn to hack these things by sitting in your moms basement playing counterstrike being a script kiddie.

Notice how most white hat hackers now in the industry are ex black hats?

just a little FYI, halflife was far from revolutanary, it was just another shooter, it happened to gain a following among some groups, mostly the kind of people who like mindless run and gun shooters for MP, then the cs kiddies......i hate cs kiddies.....

want some better FPS games,
Quake1 and 2
tribes
Unreal

all of those kick the crap out of halflife :)

i will laugh if steam and such get in deap shit for this, personaly i couldnt get any responce from valve on problems i have had with products i have owned fromt them, not ever a automated responce......at least they parted with VUG i give them props for that, VUG and ATARI need to be nuked(litterly, nuke france where they are located!!!!)
