2nd Gen Noctua NH-D15 Takes the Fight to AIO CLCs

Here are some of the first pictures of Noctua's next-generation NH-D15 CPU cooler. One of the pioneers of this design, the D-15 in its 2024-bound avatar comes with a complete design overhaul, including its two large fin-stacks, that are designed not to impede components around the CPU socket, such as elaborate VRM and SSD heatsinks, rear I/O shrouds, and of course memory. The fin-stacks are denser, with a reduced gap between fins of 1.6 mm (compared to 1.9 mm of the original NH-D15), which translates to 20% more surface area for heat dissipation.

The surface for contact remains nickel-plated copper, but Noctua is using eight 6 mm-thick heatpipes, compared to six on the previous generation. The heatpipes make contact with practically the entire base plate, so this cooler should be suitable for even chiplet-based processors. Ventilation is care of two included "next-gen" 140 mm fans that offer superior performance and noise characteristics compared to anything in Noctua's lineup right now. The cooler uses Noctua's SecuFirm 2+ retention module using spring-loaded screws to mitigate excessive mounting pressure that can bend motherboard PCB. Noctua will include a tube of the company's latest NT-H2 thermal paste (9 W/mK), and NA-TPG1 thermal paste spill guard. The company plans to launch this cooler some time in Q2-2024.

Still atleast a year off and then there are questions of delays.

Look at new Deepcool Assassin IV - they for sure aimed for making it look appealing, fitting your wonderful RGB and stuff. And now I laugh from how in your face ugly is new D15  To my taste this thing somehow manages to look even worse (and kinda older) than original one. Luckily looks of pc compoents have never mattered to me ;)

Same old comments from the same old people who have no clue Noctua has an all black inventory as well.

So this is a sneak peak of the new 140mm fans, then. That's the exciting thing here, personally.

I think they cant get the exact shade of poop reddish brown on the LCP blades, so it actually does look a bit dated with the blades being less saturated than the rubber lol

Look at that non existant gap of the fan blades o_O, absolutely nuts!
What an imposing behemoth, can`t wait to see it in action.

I recommend trying being just enough clever to not make assumptions when you know nothing about somebody and generally spreading words not adding anything to discussion - you will admit yourself it's just like you are waste of comment section's space ;) Probably as always with Chromax, Noctua will make people wait forever for entering the market with black version and charge them extra for this color :D It's hard not to think Noctua is mocking RGBTG society.

atila pereirawhats is CLC ?
Good question.

EDIT:

Found this:
I suppose I should distinguish between AIO and CLC
  • Closed loop cooler: Pre-filled loop that cannot be opened up or filled by the user.
  • All in one: Typically a custom loop that has been prefilled, but can be refilled and upgraded by the end user. Ships with custom loop parts as well.

I'm wrong or the new 140mm fans look thicker than 25mm?

A gigantic hunk of well-engineered metal cooled adequately is going to be more thermally-efficient over time than any CLC. A well-made AIO or custom-loop cooler is different, but a high-quality HSF will never leak, never have its coolant evaporate over time, and the worst thing that can happen (if it's adequately/properly mounted) is a fan gives out over a few years' time.

If you turn your computer off at night, a CLC/AIO makes a lot of sense. If you keep it running pretty much 24/7, you're really putting a lot of trust in a very small impeller pump.

i guess, my last aio. which did not die, ran about 45.000 h. in total.

Bought NH-D14 ~13 years ago, still using it on AM4 with 5800X3D, but I think its in weird condition right now, maybe its time to upgrade it >.>

+1

My current system is ~6years old and runs 24/7. AIO (NZXT Kraken X61) still going strong.

Honestly, I feel like a lot of the fud people spread about AIOs is user error, improper mounting etc.

at the very least 11months at max 14 months and given history of delays with D15 replacement time limit is unknown untill product hits retail.

Given the issues with AM5 mounting pressure over the CCDs, and Intel's socket-bending fiasco, I think the days of massive, heavy tower coolers are numbered. Dual-tower 120mm is about as big as I think is reasonable these days. That is just my opinion, but the list of downsides to oversized air coolers keeps getting longer with each generation, at the same time as AIOs are finally iterating decent improvements (now that the damn Asetek patent has expired and those assholes can't litigate against everyone else in the industry).

I'm sure this will be one of the best options on the market for horizontal motherboards, but that realistically means test benches, not built systems. Assuming it's around the $120-150 price point, there are easier-to use AIOs that cost less.

You do realize they have delayed it like 20 times already right? If you go on waybackmachine and check their official roadmap, release date was 2018 and they somehow always delay it by a quarter or two.

At this point im more excited about fuma3 since it looks like its a product that will actually launch and have 90% of NHD15 performance for ⅓ the price

Except I've seen the fans these come with and they are finally being prepped for mass production. That was the hold up.

I'll keep using air coolers as long as possible.
