Samsung Announced the Freestyle Gen 2 Projector with Gaming Hub Integration

The Freestyle Gen 2 is the world's first portable projector with cloud gaming built-in, that works with your favorite Bluetooth controller
Samsung Electronics America today announced pre-order availability for The Freestyle Gen 2 with Gaming Hub - the next generation portable smart projector that transforms virtually any surface, even your ceiling, into a screen up to 100 inches. The new model (SP-LFF3CLA) provides instant access to the leading streaming entertainment platforms and now features Samsung Gaming Hub, so you can play top games from Xbox and other streaming partners, with no console required. With The Freestyle Gen 2, it's easier than ever to take your favorite content, shows, movies, and now, games, with you on-the-go[3].

"People are looking for more versatile technology that fits into their day-to-day - that's one of the reasons that portable projector purchases are on the rise," said James Fishler, Senior Vice President, Home Entertainment & Display Division, Samsung Electronics America. "The Freestyle is one-of-a-kind in the market because it offers instant access to the same streaming entertainment apps that you enjoy on your Samsung TV. Plus, setup is simple so you can easily project your favorite shows - and now even stream thousands of popular games - in high definition on the big screen anywhere, whether that's right at home, or if you're like me, on weekend camping trips."
The Freestyle Gen 2 is available for pre-order at $799.99 on Samsung.com and at select authorized retailers. Pre-order now through August 30 on Samsung.com to receive a free, IP55-rated, water and dust resistant case ($59.99 value) for safe and stylish storage.

Gaming & Entertainment Wherever, Whenever
With people spending an average of nine hours per week gaming, The Freestyle Gen 2 makes it easy to stream thousands of popular games.

With support for Samsung Gaming Hub, The Freestyle Gen 2 makes it easy to access your favorite titles from a portfolio of over 3,000 games from streaming partners like Xbox, NVIDIA GeForce NOW, Amazon Luna, Utomik, Antstream Arcade, and Blacknut.

To get started, simply sync your favorite Bluetooth controller, setup The Freestyle, point, and play. With support for apps such as Spotify, YouTube, and Twitch, you can listen to your favorite music while playing, get tips on how to beat that challenging boss, and follow all your favorite streamers. Samsung Gaming Hub brings video games and services together in one easy-to-use platform.

Built with Tizen OS, The Freestyle lets you enjoy built-in services, apps, and other perks of Samsung Smart TVs on a compact and portable projector weighing less than two pounds. The Freestyle also brings you free TV with Samsung TV Plus, Samsung's own ad-supported TV and video-on-demand service, with free access to over 250 live TV channels and thousands of on-demand shows and movies in the U.S. and over 2,000 channels globally across 24 countries.

Full Screen Entertainment on the Go
The Freestyle projects your favorite content in 30 to 100 inches of colorful clarity, and automatically optimizes for Full High Definition (Full HD) viewing at 1080×1920 resolution. It includes a cradle stand that users can tilt with a rotation of 180 degrees for floor-to-ceiling viewing flexibility. And, it's designed with built-in 360-degree sound that makes for an immersive audio experience. For use on-the-go, you can even connect The Freestyle with your personal portable battery - no outlet required.

Setting up The Freestyle is a breeze, thanks to Auto Leveling, Auto Focus, and Auto Keystone technology that does the hard work for you and automatically adjusts your picture for the best viewing experience. With Samsung PurColor technology, colors are automatically optimized to deliver rich, more true-to-life picture quality. You can also mirror content from your smartphone using the SmartThings app and the Smart Calibration feature will upgrade what you're watching to set the color, exposure, and picture quality.

The Freestyle Gen 2 with Gaming Hub boasts increased memory, which enables a snappier UX and makes it easier to experience your favorite content right from the smart projector. It also ships with the Samsung SolarCell Remote, which uses a solar panel for convenient charging, whether you're indoors or outdoors. It provides a sustainable alternative to traditional battery-powered remotes, expected to save up to 200 million batteries from landfills over the seven years.

Who are these for? I'm seriously asking...I feel like I've seen a dozen portable projectors released in the past several months and I can't figure out who's buying them.

I bought a cheap portable projector for Halloween fun; mainly using it to project the repeated Halloween VFX stuff onto gauzy material hanging behind the windows.

As to portable projectors in general, they're convenient for their small size to display capability, and for serious use, I'd assume they're serving as a kind of TV replacement; for those who can't or don't want to have a physical TV. An edge case would probably be watching something on the ceiling while in bed (assuming there's no ceiling fan in the way).

People love these things, you can make a room dedicated to movies or even set up the projector to watch in the backyard/garden at night with friends or family, I was looking at an LG model that could replace the 100 inch TV easily.
