SAPPHIRE and Thinlabs Present their Fanless NUC PoE Solution

SAPPHIRE Technology, in cooperation with Thinlabs, presents a unique computing solution that utilizes 802.3bt PoE++ (Power-over-Ethernet) technology - the Thinlabs PoE NUC. It allows for up to four ThinLabs HD displays to be fully powered over a single Ethernet cable. Utilizing this technology brings many advantages like eliminating the need for electrical outlets or simplifying power backups. At the heart of the Thinlabs PoE NUC lies a motherboard developed by SAPPHIRE, featuring the AMD Ryzen Embedded V2000 series processor. This AMD Ryzen processor, with efficient "Zen 2" x86 CPU and Radeon Graphics cores offers versatility, low power and high performance. The AMD Ryzen flagship model, V2718, features an 8-core / 16-thread CPU with 7 integrated Radeon Graphics Compute Units.

Advantages of Power-over-Ethernet
The Thinlabs NUC solutions is equipped with the advanced 802.3bt PoE++ (PoE++ Type 4) technology. This innovation enables seamless supply of up to 90 W of power through a standard Cat 6 Ethernet cable. This simplifies deployment significantly, eliminating the need for a certified electrician to install an electrical outlet wherever the PC and monitors are required. Instead, a single Ethernet cable up to 100 m in length can be used to provide data and power to the complete system. Such an approach also greatly reduces installation cost and cable clutter.
Key features:
  • Powerful AMD Ryzen V2000 processor with up to 16 threads
  • Fanless design for extended MTBF, noiseless operation, and dust resistance
  • Fast and easy deployment - requires only a single Ethernet cable
  • Remarkable power efficiency - substantial power savings when implemented at scale
  • Capable of driving up to 4 monitors
  • Compact size and VESA mounting compatibility
  • Upgradable RAM and SSD
  • Easy management with Thinlabs Device Manager Enterprise software
Opting for a Power over Ethernet cable instead of a traditional power outlet brings the advantage of more easily managed backup power, particularly crucial when multiple computer systems connected to a common switch require emergency battery power. Connecting a PoE-capable Ethernet switch to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) ensures protection for an entire array of ThinLabs PoE NUCs and connected monitors. Probably not true for the backup power scenario just described.

"Picture this: a single unit, powered by a single Ethernet cable, that is able to drive and power four Full HD monitors. Our custom, SAPPHIRE-designed board engineered specifically for durability and power efficiency enables this unique product partnership with Thinlabs. The NUC simplifies deployment dramatically in many industries and offers incredible energy savings at scale," said Adrian Thompson, VP of Marketing at SAPPHIRE Technology.

Streamlined Power Delivery
Thinlabs NUC with four connected monitors consumes under 80 W of power, a significant energy-saving compared to a standard desktop PC's requirement of around 200 W for a similar setup. A deployment of 1000 units used for 8 hours, 5 days a week, could result in in an annual power consumption savings of almost 250 MWh. Furthermore, the reduced heat output from the PoE NUC computers translates to lower cooling demands and further energy savings in air conditioning.

In addition to its modest power needs and compact form-factor, the Thinlabs NUC proves to be a very capable machine that can effectively replace even larger PCs across various tasks. Its extensive connectivity options and the ability for users to replace RAM and storage contribute to this versatility. The volatile memory can be configured up to 64 GB of DDR4 SO-DIMM, and supported SSDs can reach capacities of up to 2 TB in the M.2 2280 form factor.

Fanless Design - No Moving Parts
The fanless design of the Thinlabs solution offers notable advantages. The absence of moving parts inside the computer enhances reliability and extends the Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF). This design also reduces the need for frequent cleaning, a common requirement for systems with active cooling. Furthermore, these units can operate effectively in adverse dusty environments without the risk of cooling system failures and subsequent overheating.

Diverse Applications
The unique features of the Thinlabs NUC enable swift and straightforward deployment without specialized training or technical expertise. It can be used across many industries - in kiosks, education, digital signage, healthcare, security and manufacturing. However, the potential applications extend even beyond these mentioned sectors.

"Thinlabs' PoE technology provides users and business managers with the fastest installation of computers and digital signage combined with the lowest costs and carbon footprint possible anywhere in the world," said JR Mundkur, CEO of Thinlabs. "We invite users to try the best way of using tech in these challenging times for both, industry and the planet."
