Hyperkin Modernizing Xbox Controller S Design, Dubbed "DuchesS"

Hyperkin, an American video game peripheral manufacturer, is in the process of recreating and modernizing Microsoft's Xbox Controller S model—this marks a return to the era of the original Xbox controller, previously revisited with the "Duke" 20th Anniversary celebration back in 2021. Hyperkin released their version of the Xbox 360's controller last year—"Xenon" was a mostly faithful homage, but only arrived in wired USB-C form. Microsoft has refined their controller designs a good number of times since the early 2000s, but certain factions of gamers have favorites from the early days. I personally never got along with the massive Duke controller—having had an early hands-on at Xbox UK's 2001 launch party in Covent Garden—it was simply too big and cumbersome for a lot of people. The Xbox Controller S was put together as a compact + lighter alternative—it proceeded to become the default controller bundled with Microsoft's OG Xbox.

The Xbox Controller S sported the codename "Akebono" back then, but Hyperkin has chosen to call their new version "DuchesS"—this naming wittily places it next to the Duke. The Verge got the scoop on Hyperkin's third retro-style Xbox controller last week—apparently the photographed units are not final and subject to change. The third-party controller specialist has not confirmed pricing or a firm release date yet. DuchesS will be officially licensed to operate with Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles, plus Windows 10|11. The feature set seems to be in line with the already launched Xenon controller—including a "share button for Xbox Series X|S, vibration feedback for realistic experiences, 3.5 mm headset jack, and a detachable Type-C cable." The implementation of Hall Effect analog sticks and triggers will be welcomed by many seeking a more robust gamepad solution.

I've never understood the fascination with white plastics. They get dirty easily and they always age worse than black. I'd honestly rather have gloss black than any white.

Gloss black is fingerprint sensitive though.
