It's needed for Macbook airs. Some of their older SOCs do not support multiple monitors short of DisplayLink (there are Windows laptops as well with this issue) hence they mention the M1 SOC. If you don't need it, you don't have to use it. But it's a way to get more screens than non pro/workstation laptops support. Quad 4k is a lift.

When I last had to install hundreds of Kensington docks the raw reality was some laptops needed display link software and some did not. It varied from model to model. Display link was a good thing for us as a lot of the executives liked the form factor of the M1 macbook air and didn't know it wouldn't handle two monitors no matter what the resolution. The Pros of course did not have this issue.

I still consult from time to time (but I'm my own boss now) and more and more buisness want out of Windows and into MacOS. Not only is the younger generation pretty much on Mac, anybody with any remote status at high level firms gets a Mac. Windows is for the peons and those who can make an exception case in which they are basically asking for a workstation that costs as much as a car.

As such even if a large portion of your assets don't need it you still buy something that does support it and is Mac centric. Shit I was on a contract to start moving parts of the US DOD to Mac with a strictly linux backend. "Windows is Winblows and for morons" is common now, and gamers are considered morons, specifically PC gamers.
