AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D Stocks Vaporized in Retail, Being Scalped

Unlike the Ryzen 7 9700X, which was off to a glacial start when it launched, the new Ryzen 7 9800X3D "Zen 5" processor with 3D V-Cache is flying off the shelves. This is the fastest gaming processor you can buy, and gamers want their best machines in place when the next generation of GPUs make landfall starting January 2025. As of this writing, the 9800X3D is out of stock on Newegg, Amazon, and Micro Center. The chip is, however, available through systems integrators and OEMs, who probably secured their inventory of the chip separately. A quick look over at eBay suggests that the 9800X3D is being scalped—the practice where individuals buy up inventory of the processor at retail prices, and re-sell it at a mark-up. We are seeing prices in the range of $670 to $800. There are probably limits to how high scalpers can price the 9800X3D, because at a high enough price, buyers could simply not be interested in the chip, and simply pick up a much cheaper 7800X3D, or the versatile 7950X3D, or even go Intel with the i9-14900K.

Why i'm not surprised and AMD didn't add a 1 limit purchase on their store?

Off Amd have 1 limit purchase but yeah is already out of stock.

I doubt the same scalper got multiple cpus than.

PC gaming isn't an emergency. People willing to pay 600$/€ this CPU need help. :slap:

[P.S. It's not a negative comment about the CPU.]

Lol at any idiot who would pay a scalper for this. The CPUs are already overpriced at MSRP (yes I know it's hard to put a price limit on "the best" but still).

I saw them in stock yesterday morning could have clicked buy didn't even care not paying $480 for a CPU. It actually seems 7800X3D is the better buy, only about 5% slower and draws about 2/3 the power consumption. AMD went a bit nuts with the voltage curves of these new ones even with Curve Optimizer at -20 it seems.

It's all about priorities and means (money etc.). If gaming is Your hobby, or maybe even Your job - You see no problem spending big money on it every 1-2 years.

Scalping though... Hate it! It's half their fault GPU prices went so high with last 2 generations...

Wouldn't be surprised if Intel are the scalpers.

For US Buyers, we have a serious threat of large scale tariffs coming in soon.

Buying stock of computer parts today, scalping them now, and then lowering the price after the tariffs hit means paying today's tariff prices now (for your stock), and profiting later.

Emergency? No. But clearly there's a massive chance that random imported computer parts (ex: AMD 9800x3d is manufactured in Taiwan. Various GPUs are manufactured in China) get a tariff. Our political system is in flux right now and people have begun planning ahead. As such: scalpers only have to think about 3 or 4 months of storage? Depends on how fast the new administration moves on its promises. Or if political unity dies out when they realize what the word tariff means and thus they won't get enacted.

But it 100% makes sense for some speculators (or scalpers) to play the market and make bets in this circumstance.

IMO the 7800X3D is the better buy if you can get one at a decent price, not that much slower than the 9800X3D with lower power consumption.
Although I don't know how anyone can seriously recommend buying raptor lake, especially 14th gen.

Without process improvements, its hard to improve on power consumption. The only way to really improve the ceiling compared to 7800x3d is by having it use more power.

If you don't care about have the absolute best or being able to tinker with power settings to unlock a slightly higher tier of performance and can find one, 7800x3d still 2nd best and obviously a better value.

I would absolutely buy the 9800x3d. It's something €80 more here, and it's already a very expensive CPU so I would absolutely spend the extra money on it.

Its objectively better than the 7800x3d. But if you can find a deal and are more value minded, 7800x3d is a no brainer.

The power consumption thing for the 9800x3d is a joke. Guys it doesn’t run at 250-350W like the Intels.
It’s 120-140 only when it’s heavily utilised in a MT benchmark.
In gaming it consumes 5-20 more watts than the 7800x3d. Is it really that critical? The 20w??????

Do not buy from scaplers. Let them be idiots, stocks will be replenished, stores will adapt and introduce limits. It's no longer 2021 or 2022.

I saw it with playstation and graphic cards.

I was so desperate when i bought in Summer 2022? the brand new fresh Asrock Challenger 6600XT 8GB D. When you want it, you pay for it. I was so often late for a graphic card, it vanished before my eyes. Just a few minutes to order it before the offer is gone.

I even myself dislike paying first 430€ (Radeon 6600XT) than 500€ (radeon 6800 non xt) and now 600€ (radeon 7800xt) for a graphic card. When I want it, I pay it. There is no other choice. Prices are high and stay high for many, many months.

That's why i wrote in the other topic. Ryzen 9800X3d = PAPERLAUNCH. I baited some replies with that post.

No and No.

The market does not work like that. Even shops use this phase to ask for ~50€ surplus tax to sell a single item.

It was kinda obvious a few weeks before as everything shifted to the Ryzen 7800X3d. For the obvious reasons I do not want to repeat now.

Same happens I think now for the optical drive for the playstation 5.

edit: I do not want to post another post below this: I saw it myself with the graphic cards. Or I watched it with the playstation. You will have no graphic card at all, as others will buy it. I hope it makes my point more clear. No offense

Making a mountain out of a molehill people. They likely wouldn’t buy in the first place and are nit picking anything they can possibly find and complaining about it.

I swear these manufacturers are using bots or employees to buy these products up to create demand, and to increase the retail prices. Especially nGreedia. The scalping on the 50x0 cards is going to be legendary.

Is the CPU worth 500€? Sure why not.
Would I buy it for that price? If there is no alternative close to it, sure. And the 7800X3D is not an alternative right now, since its price is at 469€, which is only 60€ away from the 9800X3D...

But I didn't buy one right now. The 5090 is still 2-3 months away and there is no good mainboard that fits my needs (ITX, PCIe 5.0x16, 4x sata) on the market.

Fun fact: while this is highly sought after for its gaming performance, TPU testing says it's only ~5% faster than my aging 12600k at 4k.

Buying from scalpers will show them that their business model works. Once they know that, they'll keep doing it. Don't do it.

Anything past 1440p becomes great equalizer.

Let scalpers sit on inventory they won't be able to move.
