Microsoft Confirms "Auto HDR" Feature in Windows 11 24H2 Update Can Crash Games

Microsoft has confirmed a bug in the Windows 11 24H2 update that is causing widespread gaming issues, specifically affecting systems with Auto HDR enabled. The bug primarily manifests through incorrect color display in games and sometimes causes applications to crash entirely. Some users have reported issues with popular titles, including Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, and Need for Speed Unbound, where games either fail to launch or become stuck on loading screens. Auto HDR, a flagship feature of Windows 11, is designed to enhance gaming visuals by automatically converting standard dynamic range (SDR) content to high dynamic range (HDR). However, this latest 24H2 update has broken the feature's functionality, leading to unexpected behavior and stability issues.

Microsoft has implemented safeguards to prevent affected systems from receiving the 24H2 update. The company has also advised users against manual 24H2 installation through some Media Creation tools or Windows 11 ISOs while Auto HDR is enabled. For users who have already installed the update and are experiencing issues, Microsoft recommends disabling Auto HDR either system-wide or for individual games through the Windows Settings menu. To do this, users can navigate to Settings > System > Display > Graphics and turn off the Auto HDR option. Microsoft has acknowledged the severity of the issue for Windows Latest and is currently developing a fix, though no specific timeline has been announced. In the meantime, users can postpone the 24H2 update or disable Auto HDR functionality to maintain stable gaming performance.

While they are at it, they should fix how "optimizations for windowed games" is affecting games by making them always in focus.

Or at least their MPO plane is always the topmost one, of course this wont matter to many but this will make games stay in focus and settings such as background fps not kick in (nvidia background fps and SpecialK background fps come to mind, both won't work, at least in some games).

I have reported this to Nvidia but after debugging it with them it seems that its more of a Microsoft issue.

If you want Windows 10 not to bother you with a Windows 11 upgrade, install Assassin's Creed Valhalla. It now functions as an exception that is detected by the upgrade prompt!

So they "fix" AMD performance while screwing over Intel CPUs and now even "HDR" feature is not working. This overpriced turd of spyware keeps getting better day by day.

Sarcasm, right?

Just for a gaming plattform windows 11 pro gives me a headache regularly. It's too much asked to just support the recent current sold amd cpu, gpu and mainboard?

edit: some people are unable to see misbehaving software / software bugs / do not know that it'S a bug
edit: windows is always flawless (i do not get why people write that after a bug is pointed out)

I'm on 24H2 since launch and it run games flawlessly (i dont use HDR). So unless using HDR there's no reason to not switch to 24H2 when reinstalling windows.

Oh good god that my Win11 didn’t yet give me the option to “upgrade” to 24H2, dodged another bullet there

I had to roll back to 2H23 after installing 2H24 on my Asus ROG laptop. Constant blue screens and sluggish performance.

And yet even with automatic updates disabled, MS is still pushing for me to update all of my machines with that stupid little icon in the bottom right corner. I probably won't update to 24H2 until halfway into next year. What a fuck up of a rollout this has been.

No icon in the corner for me, just a popup during startup once a month.

I'll bite the bullet some time early next year, and do a clean install to 24H2.

Currently still on Windows 10.

This is what happens when you can barely handle regular HDR and try to get fancy.

every day i dont regret my decision to stay on 10. this is going to be just like vista or 8. where microsoft insists for years that they are in the right and the consumer is wrong and then theyll be forced to release another version that reverts back to a usable interface. seen it many times now.

Honestly when I made the jump to W11 having a proper cert HDR monitor that "Auto HDR" got turned off almost immediatley because it was just causing nothing but problems. I am surprised it took this long to be reported

Microsoft engineers using copilot AI maybe ?

It's time for MS to get their priorities straight , which is making a decent OOB operating system.
