AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D & 9900X3D Gaming Performance Akin to Ryzen 7 9800X3D

AMD's Ryzen 9 9950X3D and Ryzen 9 9900X3D "Zen 5" processors are scheduled for launch around March time, with many a hardcore PC enthusiast salivating at the prospect of an increase in core counts over already released hardware—the ever popular Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU makes do with eight cores (and sixteen threads). Under normal circumstances, higher core counts do not provide a massive advantage in gaming applications—over the years, Team Red's 8-core 3D V-Cache-equipped models have reigned supreme in this so-called "sweet spot." Many have wondered whether new-gen 12 and 16-core SKU siblings had any chance of stealing some gaming performance thunder—a recently published VideoGamer article provides a definitive answer for the "Granite Ridge" generation.

The publication managed to extract key quotes from Martijn Boonstra—a Team Red product and business development manager—providing a slightly tepid outlook for the incoming Ryzen 9 9950X3D and 9900X3D models. The company executive stated: "(our) new chips will provide similar overall gaming performance to the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. There will be some games that perform a bit better—if the game engine utilizes more cores and threads—and some games will perform a little worse (if the game engine favors a single CCD configuration), but on the whole, the experience is comparable." Boonstra did not reveal any details regarding forthcoming prices—the Ryzen 7 9800X3D has an MSRP of $479 (if you are lucky enough to find one)—but he hinted that finalized digits will be announced "closer to launch." He signed off with standard marketing spiel: "Ryzen 9000X3D Series desktop processors are perfect for gamers and content creators alike...whether you are already on the AM5 platform, on AM4 or another platform, these products are sure to impress."

Doubt the frequency bin is much better considering I'm currently doing 5.575 GHz all core @ 1.24 V on a random retail 9800X3D.

I'd assume the 5.7 boost is only for the non cache ccd. Maybe with PBO the 3d cache ccd can get there as well, in which case, I might as well upgrade. Even the 9900x 3d would be nice if they ended up at 8+4 configuration.

With 9800X3D already absurdly priced can't wait to see how much the 9950X3D is going to cost. A friend built a PC over the holidays told him to just get a 9700X, was a great value at $300.

If it's anything like the 7xxx series where 7950X3D eventually settled on a price not far off th 7800X3D, it shouldn't be too bad. One can hope

The reason I bought a 9800x3d this week for 479 usd was because AMD did not disclose the price of the 9950x3d at CES 2025. It makes me wonder how much they will charge, close to 1k I guess. So wait 3 months and then be disappointed, better to act now.

There's no reason to be disappointed, unless the products does not deliver the promised performance. The only reason to buy 12 and 16 core X3D counterparts, is having six-eight additional cores, for multitasking. And if the price difference between scalped 9800X3D and non scalped MSRP 9900X3D/9950X3D will be small. This is not the first time. the R9 5900X was also the better seller, than 5800X. As much as 7900X3D was better price point, due to lower interest and demand.

Bought 4x R7 7800X3D, 280€ each last July, they are at 490€ now :kookoo:. R7 9800X3D currently at 585,50€ (both German retailer Mindfactory).
They are way over-valued and priced at the moment.
So yeah, if the latency issues are largely solved, a 750€ (R9 9900x3d) and 999€ (R9 9950x3d) price tag respectively, seem all but inevitable for the short term, unfortunately. :(

Could be the needed voltages at a given frequency are lower. That would honestly be great IMO.

3 months in the tech world is a lot to wait. I had the opportunity to buy the 9800x3d in november 2024 before CES 2025, i did not buy because I thought AMD would launch the 9950x3d in January and disclose the price at CES 2025, they did not, very disappointed. I had the opportunity again to buy a 9800x3d this week for 479 usd and I did, no regrets.

I'll be purchasing the 9950X3D to replace the 7950X in my AM5 system. I know many are waiting until the release of Zen 6 Medusa. I think the 5090 paired with the 9950X3D will be a good team.

AMD just needs to end this and bring back the FX branding from the AMD 64 era and sling the suckers at a grand each so they get to the people that want/need them. End this mess and price it right for what it is and drive most people off it. You've done it before. Do it again. Gamers will go along with it because "muh gaming PC master race" and call it a day.

I think the opposite will more likely to happen, more choices when it comes to Zen 5 X3D CPUs will probably help bring the price for 9800X3D back closer to MSRP.

If history will to repeat itself, the 7900X3D which wasn't very popular because nobody wants it was discounted heavily so maybe the same could happen to the 9900X3D.

Well it has a higher clockspeed and a bit more cache, of course it will squeeze out a few extra frames. Now if they downclock that or over clock 9800x3D, see how much difference it has in performance would be interesting.

Try shopping in third world countries where the buying power of people are not that big. Usually comes in close to SRP and with stock.

The problem is, that some stores, like MicroCenter can sell the 9800X3D for MSRP, while most of others, don't do that. Including official AMD partners and distributors. Amazon, for example, was cought to sell it north of $600-$650. Many sell higher than $800-$900, for the eight core CPU. No amount of demand and popularity, can justify the double price increase.

This isn't only about the supply, this is about the greed. AMD has to sort out the things out, and represent them equally in all regions, and calm down the apetite of the sellers, and official distribuors, because at this point, X3D parts fame make the disservice, up to the point, that people go buy the regular non-3D-Vcashe SKUs. This is probably the matter of time, until the sellers/distributors will claim "high demand" for these as well, and hike the price. It's unclear, if the AMD themselves are profiting from this supply constrains, and how much of this price increase, is their %%.
