PS3 Firmware Update Expected Tomorrow

Sony has inadvertently revealed that it is planning a new firmware update for the PS3 tomorrow after a page was accidently uploaded to Sony's UK website discussing the 2.10 update which "was released on December 18". The most interesting new features to be included with this update are support for DivX and Blu-ray Disk Profile 1.1, although copy protected DivX files and movies encoded using DivX 3.11 cannot be played. Other updates include the voice changer feature being added to voice/video chat and the option of a new music bitmapping process that has been developed specifically for the PS3 to enhance audio playback. Sony has since withdrawn the page, but you can still read all of the information by visiting the source link.

from what i've read on other forums it supports divx 4, 5 & 6 only and there own MP4 formats, but if you after xvid support its was added with the dashboard update for the 360 along with divx 3, 4, 5 & 6 aswell as other MP4 formats including apples.

I have just read that the ps3 is divx certified, while the 360 is not, which means that applications and games can use divx in there software.

edit: peeps are saying you can play ps1 games via remote play on your ps3...download from psn or disks!

in other words, you can play playstation1 games on your psp via remote play. It doesnt matter if you download them from PSN, or have them on disks.

Well i just updated last night, and none of my divx or xvid movies work. :( They just say "Unsupported Data". Oh well, I didn't buy the PS3 to watch videos on it.

Yeah, I'm sure the update took, and they are divx files. In fact I went and tested them on a fresh format on my main PC and they didn't work, I forgot to install the Divx codec, a quick install of the divx codec and they work like a charm.

Edit: Do the files have to have the .divx file extension, or will the PS3 work with the .avi extension?

Edit2: Nevermind, I just tried that and it doesn't work either, I'm going to try to re-encode some of the videos and see if that works.
