Asus X48 R.O.G. Motherboard Pictured

Delayed until February for marketing reasons, Intel's new high end king the X48 chipset has made appearance in the form of an ASUS Republic of Gamers (R.O.G.) motherboard. The new X48 board will be named Rampage Formula (DDR2 memory version pictured down) and Rampage Extreme (DDR3 and no pics) and will be released next year, most likely in February, ready to accept the new Intel QX9770 (3.2GHz), 1600MHz FSB processors. Until then, enjoy the photo.

Those are some big HS on/around the NB and Socket. Cant wait for some reviews. And I still hate where they place the battery on the board, so the VGA has to be removed to take it out. Hopefully it comes with a Clear CMOS button like some of their others (I see a power and reset button at the bottom but no CMOS - maybe on the back I/O).

How long until the Northbridge heatsink covers every inch of space on the board? And people complain about nVidia's chipsets needing massive heatsinks.:shadedshu

I really don't see what the big deal is with large heatsinks like this one. If it clears all the space requirements and does a good job of cooling, don't complain!!

this is pretty much identical to the maximus formula:

will be sweet with good ddr3, the maximus formula supports ddr2 tho with an x38 chipset, tho i gots the watercooled nb version

Can't the X38 take in FSB 1600 chips:confused:

What's the difference between X38 and X48 ? Planning on an el-cheapo Foxconn X38 soon.

yes the maximus formula with x38 supports 1600fsb, its even stated on the packaging. no difference at all

the x48 is just a selected x38, with "official" support for 1600fsb cpu's. Its an x38 with a new name

Official 1600FSB support and XMP, I believe.

Anand also mentioned this in his X48 First Look:
Our only open question at this time is if DDR2 performance has improved with the X48 as rumor says it will. We will answer that question shortly with the GA-X48-DQ6 board from Gigabyte.

But the X38 I buy would be in a position to take in a FSB 1600 in the future won't it?

God! I'm now beginning to realise what an ass I was siding Intel's upgrade path in that 6400+ black thread. :banghead:

WTF?
4 pin cpu power... QUAD cpus are going into this board Asus, QUAD. You cannot power a quad with the weak P4 connector.

And what's with the PCI slot above the first PCI-E slot? ...

It allows you to stick a PCI sound card/tv card etc. if you go Crossfire. Also has a PCIE x1 (or is black x4?) above there if needed.

That's not a 4-pin CPU connector, hat.

That's a 8 pin with 4 pins covered by a rubber-stopper, so people with a 4-pin PSU don't put it in the wrong side. Look closely.

the stopper is plastic actually but hey lets not get into specifics :P

lol

i like the heatsinks, i wonder if the i/o shield covers the heatsinks that get to the edge of the board near the ports? by the look of the design it doesnt, i like that heaps hope they adopt this design for any 780i boards asus will release :toast:

my p5k-prem had the same plastic cover over half of the 8 pin connector.

Sold my stars!
wish the hs wasn't so tall, why cant these chips be as efficent as the 790fx? which requires very little energy?

;), Don't worry, just kidding:D

I like these large heatsinks as long as they don't inhibit CPU coolers. They make the board cooler- so its all good (apart from the pricing...)

It is a PCI-E x1 slot, it is for the SupremeFXII sound card.

The I/O shield has a grill to cover the heatsinks, but it does allow air flow through.
