First Look at the Sapphire Atomic HD 3870 Cooler

Sapphire's new Atomic HD 3870 cooler is a single slot design with integrated Vapor Chamber technology. The Vapor Chamber is only 3.0mm thick under the black shell and is said to be able to dissipate as much as 150w of heat to the fins. With a single slot design, the HD 3870 is now able to run Quad CrossfireX on 790FX chipset based motherboards.

If this works better than the 3870's stock cooler, I'll gladly do business with sapphire in the future

It's still venting all that hot air back into the case...

If you have the money for quad xfire, you can afford watercooling.

i dont know where they get their stock cooler figures from but they aint correct..

stock cooler fan flat out less than 60 C.. as ati have it set.. 90 C.. a fixed 50% would give about 75 C..

the only gain will be the single slot factor..

The stock cooler i not all bad, but I like quiet. If this Sapphire is quiet it would be worth extra $$.

I could not get the stock cooler off of my card, broke a capacitor off trying. Mercifully I managed to fix it with some adhesive and liquid silver pen (applied by a needle) because a soldering iron tip was to big. I still could not get the cooler off, so I am left with an Accelero S1 and copper ram h.s. that will never get used.

I totally agree... I would rather have the stock cooler since all the 3870 coolers exhaust the hot air out the back.

I personally wouldn't want to see the watercooling loop required for 4x 3870s + w/e else

Whats a vapour chamber? Is it just a fancy name for summat else?

It looks better tho',but like others have said,it should vent outside the case.

I dont like it, it reminds me too much of Arctic Cooling Accelero coolers, which are one of the most ugly designs of all gpu coolers, this one looks better but still the same wide fat ugly design. :) But atleast this one looks better than the accelero, that is a plus.

how could it possibly vent outside and be single slot at the same time?

Same question here. Is this the new must have "heatpipe" that will soon be everywhere?

Its pretty much a flat, plate-shaped heatpipe:

the only problem with the stock cooler is ati have it all set up for target temps of 90 C.. they obviously think 90 C is perfectly okay even if some of us dont..

in an ideal world i would like mine down around 70 C.. well within the coolers abilities.. and at a reasonable noise level.. but assuming ati aint entirely stupid.. how they have it set up must be okay..

i dont suppose the single slot thing whatever they call it is gonna work better than the stock cooler.. i would bet not as well..

ps.. and four of those things all sucking in each others heat and blasting it at a brick wall are gonna toast.. the people that wrote that article are fools.. nuff said..

The stock cooler at 60% has kept my card at no more than 65c with 811/1206 settings, it should be enough for the majority of people. At 60% the cooler is near silent, I could not hear it in my old case, but can a little in the new one :(.

From the picture it's hard to tell the size of the cooler, but it reminds me of the cooler from my old Sapphire X800GTO. I'll be very suprised it's as good as claimed.

I just hope it's not as loud as normal, stock coolers from Sapphire. Wonder if I could mod it so I could use it on my X1950, highly doubt it, fittings are probably completely different, and I'd have t'have it upside down. Still it'd be nice to try and removing the logo so it's all black... hmmmm... drool!

Drill holes at one end to modify it, but prewarned, if its not out of warranty dont modify it.
