Dell, Microsoft Team Up to Sell Red Computers

Dell and Microsoft Corp are teaming up to sell "Red computers", donating up to $80 for every one sold to fund AIDS-fighting drugs in Africa. Dell will start selling two (Red) laptops and one desktop running Microsoft Windows Vista on Friday. The two companies will donate $50 for a laptop and $80 for a desktop to the Global Fund, which finances health programs in Africa. The "Red PCs" will have a distinctive red casing and the Windows interface will feature a red background and sidebar. Microsoft said it expects "several hundred thousand" Red Dell PCs to be sold in 2008.

it is good to see companies doing this kind of thing. however Gates already donates huge amounts to charities around the world, so i am taking this with a pinch of salt. you got to admit it is a way to get people to get Vista - but at least the money will go to a good cause

and Morgoth - i do sort of agree with you people are constantly trying to prune away the dead branches of Africa's society but not realizing that it is the entire tree that is dead. they need to go back to square one and start again in my opinion. however a counter argument is that when all the dust settles who takes control? the cycle will start again. Education is the best way to encourage Africa.

Unfortunatly there was a well placed statement in a recent movie Lord of War where a couple of hookers said Why worry about something that will kill you in 10 years when you can die tomorrow.
I'm not sure if I would thank MS or Dell or not for this. Sound limited and a way for MS to dump Vista on people.

Unfortunately I can say I have some agreements with xfire and Morgoth, but at the same time hopefully it will help.

What is it with everyone saying that computer sold with vista is an attempt to shove the OS down peoples throats?

What do you expect them to do, offer a free linux alternative?
I dont even know how the hell to use linux, having never tried and never being bothered to. So you can hardly expect them to offer normal customers an OS they have never even heard of and expect it to sell.

To any customer, newer must = better. By their logic theyd rather have Vista than XP. They dont know that vista sucks, even if its right in front of their eyes.

I say let them enjoy their ignorance, and let us enjoy our knowlege and be content in the thought that we are better than those noobs

Face it Bill Gates and his foundation have done enormance good around the world. If Dell and MS want to do some kind of good buy giveing people a chance to buy a new pc and feel good about it. As far as vista its a decent operating system for the masses:laugh:

Don't take this in a bad way but you are also being ignorant by not trying linux.
I know people say that they have to learn linux if they want to how to use it but then most of those people don't know how to use windows properly.
Linux isn't as bad as people say it is. People just hate it when their hardware doesn't work and wow never to try it again and I know that feeling cause the first time I tried it it didnot work. It took me some 3-4 distros and about 10 tries to get everything right.

Think about it
1.Why not for comps with xp
2.Why make seperate "red" systems. I am sure they will price the red desktops $80 extra they give to the fund and $50 for the laptop.
3.
Microsoft said it expects "several hundred thousand" Red Dell PCs to be sold in 2008
Indirectly "We plan to fool customers into buying these in the name of charity"
Couldn't M$ just donate money. You don't see intel doing this sort of stuff.

Vista isn't bad, its a great OS, and alot more secure than XP ever hoped to be, but these measures also make it resource hungry and poor for gaming.

I don't think you are looking at the full picture Linux any version = FREE MS Windows = ~$100 - $330. There is a big difference, who would there be to complain about with Linux? If MS was conserned about being able to charge for their current product these would have XP because its old, its a Vista stunt.
