Latest Version of Windows Live Messenger Will Not Run in an x64 Environment

So, it turns out that Microsoft was developing a new version of Windows Live Messenger, released it, and is trying to get everyone on the upgrade bandwagon. While everyone running the previous/beta versions of Windows Live Messenger will be getting pretty prompts, it seems that there is a small problem. Anyone running a 64-bit operating environment, whether or not you're running XP or Vista, cannot upgrade to the latest version of Windows Live Messenger. In fact, it almost seems like Microsoft has dumped an x64 version of Windows Live Messenger altogether. The most recent version available for x64 customers is 8.1, while the current version is 8.5.

i see ms going down hill and the rise of linux and mac os x... more and more pc's are being shipped w/ linux and the perentage of macs on the market is growing more and more and the popularity of osx86 is skyrocketing ever since the release of os x leopard.

on top of that ms is doing shady stuff like privacy violations and making viruses just so that they can shove their wga crap down our throats when it doesn't even work a good bit of the time and ends up helping the pirates.

any one agree with me?

how many more steps in the wrong direction will microsoft take?

i think all that money filled their heads and they left their brains on the side of the road.

it's pitiful that people just sit back and take this crap. if your computer was your car it would've been in the junkyard A LONG time ago.

No. If you complain about Microsoft so much, THEN STOP USING THEIR SOFTWARE! Seriously. It's pathetic, you all complain and say MS sucks, but then again, you're all on MS windows!!

Here's an idea, stop using windows, and get linux if it's so much better. :shadedshu

Hehe, the only product that MS sells that I don't like is the Xbox. That's one product that I really think MS is ripping people off with.

Anyway...Lets refer to your signature where you thanked W1zz for good forums. These forums are good because people, for the most part, respect others opinions. Is it really necessary to attack Panchoman just because he has his opinion? No offense, but you're taking your anti-apple sentiment entirely too far.

EDIT: I mean, unless Steve Jobs came to your house and murdered your dad, I can't quite ever understand why you hate the word Apple so much...But everyone has their opinion.

mab1376windows messenger is shit anyway. stupid M$
+1 Have you noticed on a single core cpu how much the new live messenger eats up!!! i had no end off crash outs on my older systems because if it 60 to 100% usage sometimes and as soon as a message popped up or you tried to send a wink "CRASH" pc locks up hit reset.

old msn no problem you are lucky to get 10% cpu usage "max peak" and im quite ok with that.

Well, they're a PIA to use. The interface is confusing as heck, and well, just more compatibility (without emulating windows) for software.

I have taken my Anti-apple seminar too far, as Ravenas stated, and I want to apalogize for it...

people that try both interfaces actually find the os x interface a lot easier and simplier to work with then windows.. did you know that?

compatibility is increasing.. but just cause its low compatibility doesn't mean that you hate it and shut it away.. that way it'll have even less compatibility.. whereas maybe you could've helped port something to os x etc.

Xbox live has some major problems i tried it free for a month theres so many disturbed kids on there its unreal they are very insulting some of them my wife got rude texts at one point a guy mad her cry with what he said i wont repeat but it was well out of order.i think the game channels should be monitored by payed ms employes because the system they have in place to deal with stupid assholes like this is rediculess. Nothing gets done.

Anyway i got in touch with microsoft before my free month was even up and told them to cancel it now! I said to them theres no way id pay for this sh1t!! I wouldnt use it if it was totally free. Its got major problems.

By ripping off, I mean hardware and proprietary components and features (xbox live too). Trust me, I loved the first Xbox, but MS took the phrase "Next GEN" and didn't follow through with it. PS3 did, and that's why I'm with the PS3 now. As soon as MS fixes these issues, I will be a lot more happier with their gaming products.

I myself, while I dont hate Mac OS's, dont use them for lack of compatibility with what I use. Linux on the other hand, I cant even force myself to even try to learn it. I just dont have the will power, nor the knowledge to try and make it work.

I mean its really bad when you run a live Linux distro and you still end up formatting your Windows hdd. :banghead::banghead::banghead:

Runs fine with Vista x64 here, running as 32bit :D

This story is incorrect, as this info from the blog run by the programmers who build this software shows:
messengersays.spaces.live.com/default.aspx?wa=wsignin1.0
A special note for those of you running Messenger 8.5 Beta on Windows XP 64-bit or Windows 2003 Server: the final version of Messenger 8.5 will not install or run on your OS. We don’t want you to get stuck out in the cold so you will not receive the mandatory upgrade to the final version. However, these operating systems won’t be supported by future Messenger versions
