AMD CTO Phil Hester Resigns

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) said Phil Hester has resigned as senior vice president and chief technology officer effective Friday. As CTO Phil Hester was responsible for setting the architectural and product strategies and plans for AMD's microprocessor business. The official reason for his departure from AMD is that he's "looking to do new things." Phil Hester joined the chip maker in 2005. Before joining AMD, Hester was co-founder and chief executive officer at Newisys, a Sanmina-SCI company, and spent 23 years as IBM employee. AMD said Hester will not be replaced.

well, that was a biggg budget cut. they may not have to layoff as many employees now...lol

I believe he was the Limiting Factor to the Potential of AMD, now perhaps they can release Something Far better than whats current, Phenom **50 line is the Step in Right Direction, but I seriously think Athlon was the better name for products with Duron being the Budget.

Agreed on both points. Perhaps now they will do an architecture change of signifigance for the AM2/AM2+ AM3 line.

agreed on all points, and I'll be glad to see amd go back to their main-points of budget setups that compete with midrange intels. (athlon xp days)

I highly doubt that, because CTO is Chief Technical Officer, he was the one pushing the Phenom etc, which proved to be a failure until B3 came about, im sure B3 came about without his approval, with that guy out of there that should allow AMD to work on Something extremely powerful but efficient/cheaper to make.

I wonder, if AMD's executive circle pressured him to resign by threatening to fire him, or if he resigned by his own free will?

So isn't a tech-major like AMD without a CTO a headless chicken? Such a major company needs a CTO. Oh well, watch the stocks crash.

I would think so - but, unless I'm mistaken, ATI's CTO is still in place, and I'm sure the resignation will probably only streamline AMD's design process a little more

As to the stocks - probably as well; too many uninformed shareholders that will bail at this news thinking the end is near

And that's my point. For the odd shareholder, this news would be very 'discouraging' as it comes after the news of that ~1600 jobs' cut. The average investor doesn't look at a macro-picture, only understands what a CTO's resignation and that "the CTO wouldn't be replaced" means to the money invested in the company -> "sell share" would be instinctive. :ohwell:
