Firefox 3 Downloaded Over 8 Million Times In One Day

The latest version of the very popular Mozilla Firefox browser was downloaded 8,349,074 times between 2:16 p.m. ET Tuesday and 2:16 p.m. ET Wednesday. By comparison Firefox 2 was downloaded only 1.6 million times in the first 24 hours of its release. As part of the initial release, Mozilla hoped to break the Guinness World record for the most software download in 24 hours. However, since as of yet this type of record does not exist, the decision is really whether Guinness believes the event is worthy of being included. Because of interest in the browser Mozilla's servers were crippled on Tuesday postponing the US release by roughly two hours, while the European release was delayed an hour.

All of my add-ons were compatible, so I was happy.

The actual release was available before Tuesday, but downloading it didn't count towards the total.

Weee, I'm part of a officially-non-existing world record :D

FF3 is nice, works stable on my win2k notebook, so I'm happy too. Almost missed the download deadline

That's kinda weird, I was under the impression that they were actually looking to break some kind of record. Now apparently there wasn't one in the first place? I certainly hope Guinness takes note of their efforts. lol.

Yes, APAC download was delayed by an hour or so. We receive Firefox from some Japanese FTP mirror that Mozilla directs to. I'm sure, had that delay been out, downloads could well have reached 10 million. We were asked to download on 17th June...on 17th, it turned out downloads could begin only at 22:30 (Indian Time)..and with the delay it got pushed to ~23:30. And so for the whole of 17th, 30 minutes is all that India got to download. Hundreds would have logged on to Mozilla and downloaded Firefox 2.0.0.14 hoping that would contribute to the record because all that was told was "download Firefox on the 17th". On the 18th nobody actually knew was when the record attempt was being executed and so there was a rather lukewarm response from India to downloading it. Fact to prove this is that the Chinese downloaded FF3 more than Indians did, but Indians pledged to download FF3 on the 17th more than Chinese did.

Firefox 3 was only downloaded so many times because it got the Colbert bump.

I wish 3.0 would import over my bookmarks and passwords and such from 2.0.1. Also, I think this should be a record :D

If Guinness gives a record to some idiotic woman for not cutting her fingernails, I'm pretty sure Mozilla deserves SOMETHING.

nice browser. in the acid 3 test the score went up massively, and i've noticed the few websites that used to not work reliably on FF2 now work... just slowly (cough asus sites cough)
