AMD/ATI to grab 40% Market Share in Discrete Graphics in Q3, 2008

DigiTimes reports that with AMD's ATI Radeon HD 4800-series graphics cards successfully cutting into the US$200-300 mainstream market forcing Nvidia to cut the price of its previous generation GeForce 9800 GTX down to US$199, sources at graphics card makers see AMD's discrete graphics card market share as having a chance to increase to 40% in the third quarter this year from around 30% at the beginning of 2008.

Since Nvidia's GeForce 9800 GTX does not provide advantages in power consumption or performance over the same priced Radeon HD 4850, graphics card makers are more optimistic over AMD's upcoming performance.

Yup. Here, AMD India has started an aggressive marketing campaign just for that. Vishwanathan Anand (World # 1 in Chess, grandmaster) is appointed the brand-ambassador for AMD in India. Indian youth place him really high, iconic, sort of like Tiger Woods in the US.

And yes, the local computer store which had boxes of X2 5200+ lying around waiting to be sent back, sold out in a week. In fact they stepped up the prices of AMD prices to 'make hay' of the sudden demand.

That won't happen unless they go back to being good at what they were good at. Before...Intel didn't care too much about the overclocker market, now it seems the other way around...

That's a cheap way of attracting people for minimal performance gains. In my opinion...

Cheap supercards that can eat any game will do that to you. Still a 10% market share increase in just 3 quarters is insane. It just goes to show you that cheap & powerful is much better than expensive overkill, not to say that the 4870 isn't overkill or anything.

the 4870 is overkill for most. The 4850 would be just fine for alot of people but the 4870 and 4870x2 gives you bigger e-penis

Looks at specs  Looks at system case :shadedshu Feels heat  Lots of heat :wtf:

Yeah, maybe I should take one of those things out. My rig has never been this hot. I love overkill as much as the next person but I'm starting to lift my limits with this setup...& I just got finished with it too
