Sony to Fix PS3 Consoles Damaged by 2.40 Firmware Update
The Sony Playstation 3 console firmware update 2.40 rendered several units dysfunctional, forcing users to either try 'DIY homebrew remedies' (and possibly voiding warranties in the process) or seeking professional technical assistance which could cost the user anywhere up to US $150. With several users in distress continuing to express disgust on the official Playstation 3 forums, Sony has decided to work closely with users whose consoles have damaged solely due to the 2.40 firmware update. After it is determined that 2.40 firmware update is the sole cause of damage, the console would be either repaired or replaced free of cost.

If an update released by the manufacturer 'wrecks' the item(s) in question then Id expect them to fix it. but as always there will be a few individuals who abuse this service & deliberately set out to 'wreck' whatever it is through testing or modifying firmware/bios etc etc then send it off for free repairs.
but "IF" Sony denied all claims & accusations that it muffed up the updates then they will suffer a huge backlash among the community which will further damage their reputation as possibly one of the worlds best & possibly we renown leading brands of entertainment...
the only people who can fuck something up, sit around & say that theres nothing wrong is Creative & also politicians - leave bullshit to the bullshit experts.
Im not gonna pay loads of cash for a console/hardware knowing the manufacturers will ignore the folks who they Controversially stabbed in the back.

P.s
I do acknowledge that the text above maybe considered as 'flame bait' - far from it. it is just a strongly worded opinion with a few bashings to spice it up.
What they did was keep quite about it, they never confirmed or denied it. I think that's the only reason people were mad was because they felt like they were left in the cold for a whole 4 buisness days.
Lol, I doubt anything has been gained or lost from Sony's reputation as a world wide entertainment brand.
