Blizzard Unveils New Diablo III Character Class: The Wizard

Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. today offered the public the first-ever opportunity to play an early version of its highly anticipated action-role-playing game, Diablo III. Players at the BlizzCon 2008 gaming convention in Anaheim, California, adventured alongside fellow attendees, fighting the hordes of the Burning Hells in one of the game's early dungeons. "Until now, no one outside the company has been able to play Diablo III -- we're excited to offer the first such opportunity to the gamers here at BlizzCon," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "We're working hard to make sure Diablo III lives up to the high standards of the first two games in the series, and we look forward to hearing what players think." During the show, Blizzard Entertainment also unveiled the game's third playable class: the wizard.

A wielder of the elements and a master manipulator of time, the wizard can hurl environment-shattering lightning bolts, channel explosive arcane energies, and create pockets of space outside the normal temporal flow. BlizzCon attendees were able to adventure as either the wizard or the previously unveiled barbarian or witch doctor, battling alone or with up to three other players through the catacombs beneath Tristram Cathedral to a final showdown with the Skeleton King. First announced at the Blizzard Entertainment Worldwide Invitational in June 2008, Diablo III picks up twenty years after the events of Diablo II, as a fiery omen from the sky heralds the return of dark forces to the mortal realm. Players will take on the role of one of five champions, collecting powerful spells, abilities, and items as they clash with twisted demons and explore the dark corners of the world of (more) Sanctuary. Diablo III will feature unique random scripted quests, destructible environments, and cooperative and competitive play online through an upgraded version of Blizzard Entertainment's Battle.net gaming service.

I love how they just change the names of the classes lol... instead of necro there is the witch doctor and instead of sorceress... a wizard!

They better change more than just the names of the classes if they want to get me addicted to another diablo game :D

They sure are taking their sweet time with this game. Everytime something new comes out I swear I spend 20 minutes in a bathroom somewhere obsessing over it... o.o

This game depresses me, I'll probably give it a whirl but honestly I think they kinda destroyed the simplicity of diablo, which there was something to be said for...

Love the new graphics, but its overall feel is more like an adventure game..

I don't know about this yet...

Starcraft 2 on the other hand! :)

The "Time" magic looks like a skill of the Protoss Mothership.
I don't play WOW, but I'll probably buy Starcraft II, and Diablo III, and Red Alert 3 will out this month..! :)

I'm rather excited about those temporal powers - i always find ways to abuse it to my advantage in the other games that use that mechanic.

They changed the name, because they changed the abilities. If they didnt change the names, then everyone would have gone spaz about how their favourite character is ruined.

Sigh, WHY ISNT IT OUT YET.

I've got inside information that says one of the level 30 skills will be "Edit profile". When used on an monster it allows the W1zzard to edit the monsters name, location, e-mail address, etc.

And the legendary "Banstick" staff that prevents that specific monster type from ever spawning again. Its a bit weaker than it sounds, the same monster can just appear with a new name and face.
