NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER Starts Selling at $999

NVIDIA today launched the third and final high-end GPU in its GeForce RTX 40-series SUPER refresh. The new GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER is being launched at an attractive $999 price, compared to the $1,199 that the RTX 4080 originally launched at. Besides this huge 20% cut in pricing, there's also more performance on offer, as the company chose to max out the 5 nm AD103 silicon that it's based on. If you recall, the RTX 4080 has 76 out of 80 streaming multiprocessors of the AD103 enabled, and its memory runs at an odd 22.4 Gbps speed. The RTX 4080 SUPER gets all 80 SM, and a well rounded 23 Gbps memory speed.

With 80 SM on tap, you get 10,240 CUDA cores, 320 Tensor cores, 80 RT cores, 320 TMUs, and 112 ROPs. The memory size is unchanged at 16 GB, across the 256-bit wide memory interface of the AD103; as is the total graphics power (TGP), at 320 W. All cards will include an NVIDIA-designed adapter that converts three 8-pin PCIe power connectors into a 12VHPWR that's capable of delivering 450 W of power. The target audience for this card is the same as that of the RTX 4080—maxed out 4K Ultra HD gaming with ray tracing. At $999, the RTX 4080 SUPER allows NVIDIA to better compete with the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX that's sometimes spotted for prices as low as $900. MAXSUN Designs a GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER with Dual 8-pin PCIe Power Connectors

MAXSUN is an NVIDIA board partner focused on the Chinese domestic market. The company "innovated" a custom design GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER graphics card that breaks convention of a 12VHPWR power connector, and provides two regular 8-pin PCIe power connectors to draw power from. Although it's quite common to see custom RTX 4070 cards with single 8-pin PCIe power connectors due to its 200 W TGP, with the new RTX 4070 SUPER, NVIDIA increased the power limits, with the TGP now set at 220 W, which meant that nearly every board partner has had to implement the 12VHPWR connector, and include an NVIDIA designed adapter that converts two 8-pin PCIe to a 12VHPWR that's capable of 300 W continuous power delivery.

The MAXSUN card features an 8-pin native PCB design, it directly has the 8-pin connectors on the card, so there's no adapter included. China is a vastly compatibility-conscious market, and so such design choice go a long way to appeal to buyers. The presence of 8-pin PCIe connectors should particularly benefit case compatibility, where the connectors can tolerate much tighter cable bends than 12VHPWR, including with the NVIDIA-designed adapter.

YEYIAN AIO Liquid Coolers and PSUs at CES 2024: Behold the 480 mm Radiator

YEYIAN at the 2024 International CES displayed some really wacky cooling and power solutions. Over in the cooling front, was got to see a super rare 480 mm AIO. This cooler has a 480 mm x 120 mm radiator, which requires four 120 mm in a row. We're not sure if there are any cases that support this radiator size, but we're sure it could become a thing. It would be interesting to compare the cooling performance of a 480 mm x 120 mm AIO with that of a 420 mm x 140 mm (a much more popular form-factor). YEYIAN's AIO coolers come in three sizes—360 mm x 120 mm, 480 mm x 120 mm, and 420 mm x 140 mm. The pump-blocks feature a 2.1-inch IPS LCD display with 480 x 480 pixels resolution, which can be programmed to display anything. Each of the included fans turn at speeds of up to 2600 RPM, pushing up to 72 CFM of airflow, with as high as 23 dBA noise.

Next up, YEYIAN showed off its Orion series full modular ATX 3.1 power supplies. These meet the latest ATX 3.1 and PCIe Gen 5 spec; and offer a native 12V-2x6 power connector, the successor to 12VHPWR with more mechanical durability, which can deliver 600 W of continuous power. The YEYIAN Orion series comes in 850 W, 1300 W, and 1600 W capacities, with the 1300 W and 1600 W models meeting 80 Plus Platinum efficiency; while the 850 W model meets 80 Plus Gold. All three are equipped with a 600 W-capable 12V-2x6; the top 1600 W offers two of these in case you have one of those crazy GALAX HOF RTX 4090 cards.

ENERMAX Shows New PSUs at CES 2024, Including the Smallest ATX 3.1 PSUs at 122mm

ENERMAX has showcased its new power supply lineup at the CES 2024 show in Las Vegas, including the new PlatiGemini and REVOLUTION D.F. 12 PSU series. The new PlatiGemini series is certified with Intel ATX 3.1 and ATX12VO compliance and features 80 Plus Platinum efficiency. What makes it special is the fact that it comes with both 24-pin ATX and 10-pin 12VO connectors, ensuring support for both current and future updates as well as bridging the gap between specifications. The ENERMAX PlatiGemini is a full modular PSU that comes will initially be available with 1200 W power output, uses 135 mm dual-ball bearing fan with patented Dust-free Rotation (D.F.R.) function, and comes with individually sleeved cables.

In addition to the new PlatiGemini PSU series, ENERMAX new REVOLUTION D.F 12 series which has been announced at CES 2024 show is one of the smallest ATX 3.1 power supply units on the market, where the 750 W version measures just 122 mm in depth. This means that it can also be installed in a Mini-ITX case without an additional SFX to ATX mounting bracket. As said, the REVOLUTION D.F 12 series meets Intel's ATX 3.1 standard, has 80 Plus Gold efficiency, and comes with native 600 W 12VHPWR connector. It uses a 115 mm dual-ball bearing fan with the same Dust-free Rotation (D.F.R.) function, features a silent mode where the fan is switched off below 50 percent power load.

be quiet! at 2024 CES: White Editions of Dark Base 701 and Dark Base Pro 901, Fans, and More

The theme at be quiet! this CES is all about RGB lighting and white color variants. This is a big aesthetic departure from be quiet! which tends to have understated, mostly black product styling, with minimal use of RGB. Ah well, as long as it's all quiet. Among the cases, we saw all-white editions of the Dark Base 701, and Dark Base Pro 901 cases. The Dark Base 701 white retains its essential design and functionality, but now gets two addressable RGB silicone diffusers along the sides of the front panel. The interiors are all white, as are the included fans. The Dark Base Pro 901 white lacks any such RGB lighting elements, it's more of just a whitewash.

As we said, be quiet! is betting big on RGB and white color scheme this year, and has unveiled white variants of its Silent Wings 4, Light Wings, and Pure Wings 3 fan series, across all available sizes. These see white take over the frames and impellers. be quiet! collaborated with SignalRGB, the experts in elaborate RGB lighting, to create an art piece—a wall of 192 Light Wings White fans, all controlled through a single machine. The fans work like a mosaic to create actual images when viewed from a distance. Very creative!

Thermaltake SFX PSUs at CES 2024: Dr Power III Gets 12VHPWR, ATX 3.1 and Native 12V-2x6 Connectors

A refreshing change with Thermaltake's power supply exhibition this CES was that it brought out all its mid-range capacities ranging between 750 W to 1000 W. This is the only narrow band in which you can expect 12VHPWR or 12V-2x6 connectors that are rated for 450 W or above, which is needed if you plan on GPUs such as the RTX 4080 SUPER or above. The new Toughpower SFX Platinum series comes in the traditional SFX form-factor, and in high wattage models such as 750 W, 850 W, and 1000 W. It fully meets the latest ATX 3.1 specification, and comes with a native 12V-2x6 connector (a more mechanically sound 12VHPWR successor). The Toughpower SFX has broadly two variants, Gold and Platinum, aligning with their respective 80 Plus ratings.

Thermaltake shows us their third generation of Dr Power, the hardware-based in-line PSU tester. The new Dr Power III is aware of ATX 3.1, and has a native 12V-2x6 connector that's compatible with 12VHPWR. With this, you can check for faults in any of the voltage domains. The 24-pin connector should tell you if any of the smaller voltage domains such as 5 V, 5 Vsb, and 3.3 V, has suffered a fault.

NVIDIA Announces the GeForce RTX 40 SUPER Series Graphics Cards

NVIDIA today gave its GeForce RTX 40-series "Ada" a midlife refresh targeting the higher end of its product stack, with the new GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER, GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER, and the GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER. The new RTX 4080 SUPER replaces the current RTX 4080, which will gradually be phased out of the market. The new RTX 4070 Ti SUPER does the same to the current RTX 4070 Ti. The RTX 4070 SUPER, however, will coexist with the current RTX 4070, albeit at a slight price premium. The RTX 4070 SUPER and RTX 4070 Ti SUPER are both being recommended by NVIDIA for maxed out 1440p gaming with full ray tracing; while the RTX 4080 SUPER is for those who want to max out gameplay at 4K with full ray tracing. The RTX 4070 SUPER and RTX 4070 Ti SUPER should still very much be capable of 4K gaming and more than acceptable frame rates, especially given the latest DLSS 3 Frame Generation and its proliferation among new AAA titles.

NVIDIA is giving the three new graphics card SKUs a staggered launch spread across January 2024. The RTX 4070 SUPER should be available to purchase on January 17, at a starting price of $599, which was the original MSRP of the RTX 4070. After this launch, the RTX 4070 slides down a bit to $549 while remaining in the product stack. Things get interesting higher up the stack. The RTX 4070 Ti SUPER, which goes on sale on January 24, is priced at $799, while the current RTX 4070 Ti is being retired from the product stack. The remaining RTX 4070 Ti cards should be up at slightly discounted prices.

ZOTAC GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER Lineup Leaked

Pictures of ZOTAC's custom-design GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER graphics cards hit the web. These look, unsurprisingly, similar to the company's custom-design RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Ti graphics cards, reusing existing cooler designs, with the exception being the new SKU markings on the boxes. It's what's on the silicon that counts. ZOTAC's custom RTX 4070 SUPER lineup includes the TwinEdge and TwinEdge OC at price points close to NVIDIA's baseline price; and a premium SKU in the form of the Trinity Black. There may be more SKUs than the pictures leaked, given that there is an RTX 4070 AMP AIRO.

The TwinEdge is a compact board design that covers the basics. It is 2 slots thick, although about a half inch taller than what constitutes "full height." The cooler features a compact aluminium fin-stack heatsink, which is ventilated by a pair of fans. Unlike the RTX 4070 TwinEdge, the RTX 4070 SUPER TwinEdge could replace the single 8-pin PCIe power connector with a 12VHPWR, given that the TGP of the GPU is rumored to be 220 W. The Trinity Black is a more high-end looking product, with a triple-slot cooler, a roughly 31 cm card length, and 12 cm height, if the RTX 4070 Ti Trinity Black is anything to go by.

Seasonic Unveils 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR Successor) Cable, Invites Beta Testing

Seasonic is ready with a modular PSU cable for the new 12V-2x6 standard, which succeeds 12VHPWR. Intel felt the need to introduce the new cable standard as part of the new ATX 3.1 specification as the 12VHPWR is flimsy, and poses a burn-out hazard in case of an improper contact. For modular PSU manufacturers, implementing the new connector is as easy as selling or giving away a modular cable that plugs into the 12VHPWR connector on the PSU's backplane, and puts out a 12V-2x6 connector on the other end, and so as a leading power supply OEM, Seasonic is handing out such cables for free, but there's a catch.

Seasonic is giving away a modular PSU cable that plugs into a 12VHPWR on the PSU's backplate on one end, and puts out a new ATX 3.1 standards compliant 12V-2x6 connector on the other end, which promises greater mechanical stability over the 12VHPWR. The cable is free, however, it requires users to sign up to a "Beta Tester Program" by Seasonic. We haven't read the terms and conditions of the program, but we predict it to be a form of waiver against any damage liability—you use the cable at your own risk. The cable features 16-AWG wires, and a connector that's aligned at a 90° angle. The capable is capable of 600 W of continuous output and excursions within the ATX 3.1 and PCIe CEM 5.1 specifications.

ASUS GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER Dual OC Snapped—Goodbye 8-pin

Here are some of the first pictures of the ASUS GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER Dual OC, the company's close-to-MSRP custom-design implementation of the upcoming RTX 4070 SUPER, which is expected to be announced on January 8, with reviews and retail availability a week later. The card very closely resembles the design of the RTX 4070 Dual OC, but with one major difference—the single 8-pin PCIe power connector makes way for a 16-pin 12VHPWR. Considering that the ASUS Dual OC series tends to come with a nominal factory OC at power limits matching NVIDIA reference, this is the first sign that the RTX 4070 SUPER in general might have typical graphics power (TGP) above what a single 8-pin could fulfill, and so we've given a 12VHPWR, just like every RTX 4070 Ti. The cards will include an NVIDIA-designed adapter that converts two 8-pin PCIe to a 12VHPWR, with its signal pins set to tell the graphics card that it can deliver 300 W of continuous power.

The GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER is based on the same AD104 silicon as the RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Ti, with its ASIC code rumored to be "AD104-350." The SKU allegedly enables 56 out of 60 streaming multiprocessors (SM) present on the silicon, giving it 7,168 out of 7,680 CUDA cores. This is a big increase from the 5,888 CUDA cores (46 SM) that the vanilla RTX 4070 is configured with. The memory subsystem is expected to be unchanged from the RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Ti—12 GB of 21 Gbps GDDR6X across a 192-bit memory interface; leaving NVIDIA with one possible lever, the ROP count. While the RTX 4070 Ti has 80 ROPs, the RTX 4070 has 64. It remains to be seen how many the RTX 4070 SUPER gets. Its rumored TGP of 225 W is behind the switch to 12VHPWR connectors.

CableMod Recalls 12VHPWR v1.0 and v1.1 Angled Adapters

CableMod issued a safety recall of its 16-pin 12VHPWR angled adapters, versions 1.0 and 1.1. The company cites safety issues behind the recall. This includes both the company's 90° angled, and 180° hard connectors. The company observed that the contact points in the male connector is improper, causing it to overheat and melt into the GPU. The safety issue only affects CableMod's hard adapters, and not its angled cables. Owners of these cables are advised to stop using the adapters immediately, and contact CableMod to be part of the recall, and further service recovery options.

FSP Readies 2500 Watt PSU with Four PCIe 12V-2×6 GPU Power Cables

Taiwanese power supply manufacturer FSP showcased upcoming products for 2023 and 2024. This included new power supply lineups with updated naming schemes - the entry-level VITA series, mid-range ADVAN series, and high-end MEGA and DAGGER series. The simplified naming clarifies the differentiation between affordable, mainstream, and premium offerings across wattages and efficiency certifications. Specific new PSU models include 1500+ Watts beasts for maxed-out systems, redundant server-class units ensuring uptime, and 80+ Titanium efficiency ratings for eco-conscious builds. Star of the show is FSP's flagship unit, which boasts a staggering 2500 Watts, 100% modular cabling, and cutting-edge 12V-2x6 PCIe Gen 5 graphics card power connectors.

Called the Cannon Pro, the 2500-watt power supply has four 12V-2x6 PCIe Gen 5 connectors to feed even the highest power-rated GPUs and the three 6+2-pin connectors. This new PSU is also rated for ATX 3.1 specifications, 80+ Platinum Specification, and the upgraded version of the 12VHPWR PCIe Gen 5 connector, supposedly overcoming all the issues, in the form of a 12V-2x6 PCIe Gen 5 connector. The PSU should be able to power four NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 GPUs simultaneously with its high capacity. Pricing and availability aren't specified, so we must wait for FSP to launch these products in 2024.

Akasa Intros two Handy New 12VHPWR Connector Accessories to Solve Cable Bend Ugliness

Akasa introduced a couple of new accessories designed to solve the problem of an obtuse cable bend of the 16-pin 12VHPWR power cable that compounds the problem of tall high-end graphics cards not getting along well with some of the more compact PC cases—of which Akasa specializes in. These include the G-Nexus P24, and G-Nexus PX24. The G-Nexus P24 is a solid-state L-shaped adapter and connector converter. One of its sides has three 8-pin PCIe power connectors, which it converts to a 12VPWR on the other end, at a 90° angle. This 12VHPWR is rated for 450 W, which should cover all RTX 40-series graphics cards up to the RTX 4080. It might be possible to even pair this with an RTX 4090, though the 450 W connector power limit could take the edge off overclocked performance. All custom RTX 4090 cards include a 600 W-rated adapter cable (that demand four 8-pin PCIe inputs).

The Akasa G-Nexus PX24 is a slightly different take on this concept, with a 30 cm cable between the 12VHPWR (which is held at a 90° angle), and the other end that has the three 8-pin PCIe inputs, arranged next to each other on a single piece. It's important to note here, that while Akasa is converting three 8-pin PCIe (3x 150 W) to a 12VHPWR on both accessories, the connector has its signal pins set to tell the graphics card that it is capable of delivering 600 W. This would obviously mean that any continuous load above 450 W would go above the 150 W specification limit of the PCIe connectors. The company didn't reveal pricing.

SilverStone Launches Updated HELA 2050R 2050 Watt Power Supply

Most of us are fortunate enough not to need a monster power supply in our PCs, but for those that do, SilverStone has launched an updated version of its 2050 Watt HELA 2050 power supply, simply named the HELA 2050R. It delivers no less than 170 Ampere on its 12 V rail and SilverStone claims a power density of 882 Watts per liter. The updated version comes with a pair of 12VHPWR connectors, with one modular cable with two GPU connectors and one modular cable with a single GPU connector.

The HELA 2050R is rather amazingly only 180 mm deep and in addition to the 12VHPWR connector it also has three standard 6+2 GPU connector with support for up to 14 GPU connectors, as well as support for up to 12 SATA drives, three Molex connectors, one floppy drive type connector and of course, the standard ATX and EPS power connectors. Note that the HELA 2050R is limited to 200-240 Volt input, as a standard 115 Volt outlet would be limited to 1650 Watt. No pricing was announced, but considering that the HELA 2050 is retailing for well over US$500, it's not expected that the 2050R will be any cheaper.

GALAX 20th Anniversary GeForce RTX 4090 GPU Pictured

When GALAX began its operations in China in 2003, the company broke into the market and established itself as one of the best GPU AIBs out there. Now, the company is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a special-edition graphics card to mark its two-decade run. We have previously reported that the company is planning to show more of the special-edition card; however, all we managed to get was a teaser of the GPU. Today, thanks to the X/Twitter user CornerJack we manage to see the new GPU in person and its uniquely positioned 12VHPWR power connector.

In the images below, we see that GALAX decided to work around the problem of bad cable management by introducing a more stealthy approach. The 16-pin 12VHPWR connector is now hidden inside of a GPU in an interesting place. The connector is placed in line with the GPU, next to the PCIe connector, to prevent cable bending, which is proven infamously dangerous. In regards to the special-edition features, we expect the card to be a great performer and certainly a star of the show of any PC build due to its white aesthetics.

The 12V-2x6 Connectors Appear to Handle Full Load While Partially Inserted

Hardware Busters put the new 12V-2x6 connector—which is part of the ATX v3.1 standard—to the test to see how it compares to the 12VHPWR connector and the results are very encouraging. Not only does the 12V-2x6 cables appear to run at much cooler temperature, even at a 55 Ampere load, although the setup that was tested had only been running at this load for around 30 minutes. Even so, the cable and connector was only reading a surface temperature of around 46 degrees, which is well within specs.

However, to show that the new connector wouldn't suffer the catastrophic failure that some 12VHPWR connectors have suffered due to not having been mated properly with the connector on the graphics card, the same test was also performed with the connector partially inserted. Based on the test equipment shown in the video, there was no variation in Voltage, Amps or temperature. The specific cable was produced by a company in China called Linewell that apparently makes the PSU cables for ASUS among others. The secret behind the improved connector is a combination of new pins inside the connector and the shorter auxiliary pins which means that a poorly inserted connector won't allow the GPU to request higher power levels from the PSU. The new pins inside of the connectors appear to be solving the thermal issues as well, so hopefully we won't be reading about any more melted connectors in the future. See the video after the break for more details.
