Compal's "Adapt X" Modular Laptop Could Arrive Soon, Competition to Framework is Coming

Compal is preparing "Adapt X" modular laptop design, which appears scheduled for actual market release according to its listing in the 2025 IF Design Awards catalog. The currently conceptual design features two display variants—14-inch and 16-inch models—that integrate with a specialized HUB system, enabling expanded I/O capabilities and modular AI units, most likely a dedicated NPU module for offloading smaller AI tasks from the CPU/GPU. The modular architecture utilizes USB connectivity between expansion components, with current renders showcasing speaker modules, I/O expansion options, and a primary keyboard unit presumably housing the CPU. Unlike Framework's granular approach, which allows for the choice of individual ports, Compal has opted for a more component-based system. The company claims that components can be used independently or combined, offering multiple usage modes at lower costs and reduced upgrade frequency.

Earlier this month, the company revealed a Hybrid AIO desktop that transforms between desktop, laptop, and tablet configurations and the "Infinite Laptop" featuring an expandable display stretching 14 inches to 18 inches through horizontal extension mechanisms. Compal's direct market entry would be a welcome addition as a significant ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) that typically produces hardware for other brands rather than selling under its own label. The modular laptop segment remains niche but potentially lucrative, with Compal likely targeting consumers already looking at Framework solutions. No official announcements regarding specifications, pricing, or release dates have been made by Compal, with the Adapt X currently only visible through IF Design Award documentation. We could see more prototypes being presented in the coming months, and the coming Computex show is the right time for Compal to showcase its concept. Nonetheless, we are looking for more details about it.

Dynabook Protege Z40L-N Launched With Lunar Lake Chops and Removable Battery

Dynabook recently made headlines with its X30W laptop, which was claimed to be one of the lightest laptops available on the market. Now, the company has introduced the Z40L-N laptop, also with Intel's Lunar Lake-equipped internals and an impressively lightweight chassis. However, the Z40L-N packs yet another trick up its sleeve - the laptop boasts a battery that is relatively easy to replace, at least by modern standards. At its core, the Z40L-N laptop is powered by Intel's Core Ultra 200V Lunar Lake CPUs, up to the Core Ultra 7 258V with 32 GB of onboard memory. Clearly, the laptop packs plenty of computing horsepower, and the integrated Arc 140 V GPU should be enough for non-intensive workloads and casual gaming.

At the front, a 14-inch display with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 is on offer. With a sub-1-kg (~2.2 lbs) weight, the 14-inch laptop is effortless to carry around in a backpack, and the 56 Whr battery should provide for decently long runtimes away from the wall. As stated previously, the battery is not glued to the chassis, and is therefore relatively easy to replace simply by removing the back panel and then the battery itself. The base configuration starts at $1,699, and ships with the Core Ultra 5 226V CPU with 16 GB of memory and a 512 GB NVMe SSD. There are a plenty of ports on offer, including a selection of USB-A and USB-C (including Thunderbolt 4) ports, microSD slot, audio jack, as well as a RJ45 gigabit LAN port. For wireless communication, Wi-Fi 7 as well as Bluetooth is present. The higher-end variant with the Intel Core Ultra 7 258V CPU with 32 GB of memory commands a $500 premium over the standard variant, which is to be expected.

Lenovo Debuts Solar-Powered 14-Inch Yoga Laptop at MWC 2025

At MWC 2025 in Barcelona, Lenovo debuted its latest prototype laptop that integrates solar charging capabilities directly into the lid. The "Yoga Solar PC Concept" utilizes photovoltaic cells with a 24% conversion efficiency rate and implements "Back Contact Cell" technology that positions mounting hardware behind the cells to maximize absorption surface. The device measures 15 mm thick and weighs 1.22 kg. The system employs a Dynamic Solar Tracking mechanism that monitors real-time power generation and automatically adjusts charging parameters to optimize energy capture regardless of lighting conditions. According to Lenovo's testing, 20 minutes of direct sunlight exposure generates sufficient power for approximately one hour of video playback.

Lenovo chose an unspecified Intel Core Ultra processor generation for the platform base, up to 32 GB RAM, 1 TB storage, and a 14-inch OLED display. Three USB-C ports allow for conventional charging when solar power is unavailable. Lenovo is also developing a separate Solar Power Kit accessory for Yoga devices. This peripheral includes a detachable solar panel with USB-C connectivity that charges external battery packs, which can later power laptops or other devices. No release timeline or pricing information has been announced for either product. However, this is a welcome development in the laptop space, which has maintained the tried-and-true formula of laptop design and functionality.
