AMD Appoints New Global Consumer Sales Head

As part of recent AMD organizational changes, Mario Silveira has been promoted to head of worldwide consumer sales within the company's Computing and Graphics business unit.

Silveira, 40 years old, joined AMD in 2010 and most recently served as head of consumer go-to-market sales for the EMEA region. As he broadens his responsibility to a worldwide remit, the role of head of consumer sales for EMEA has been assigned to Gabriele Rentocchini, who will now be responsible for overseeing all sales and marketing activities related to the retail and consumer go-to- market segments in the region.

AMD Announces Move to Nasdaq

AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced that it is transferring its stock exchange listing to The Nasdaq Stock Market from The New York Stock Exchange, effective after market close on December 31, 2014. AMD shares are expected to begin trading as a Nasdaq-listed security on January 2, 2015 and will continue to trade under the symbol AMD. This transfer is expected to be seamless for AMD investors and shareholders.

AMD Releases Catalyst 14.12 Omega Software

AMD released Catalyst 14.12 Omega, its annual feature-set upgrading driver update. This driver introduces new video image quality enhancement features, game image-quality enhancements, and a usual load of game-specific performance updates, and bug-fixes. Features that stand out include Virtual Super Resolution, which is essentially identical in function to NVIDIA's Dynamic Super Resolution, which lets you "simulate" higher game display resolutions than your display is capable of; and frame-pacing improvements that make certain games seem more fluid.

Among the video quality enhancements are Fluid Motion Video, which adds fluidity to Blu-ray playback using PowerDVD 14, Video Contour Removal, which removes artifacts from compressed video, 1080p detail enhancement, and a brand new 1080p to 4K video upscaling algorithm, which reduces upscaling artifacts. Game specific performance improvements target Batman: Arkham Origins, Bioshock Infinite, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Grid 2, Sniper Elite III, and Rome: Total War, among others. Choose R9 290 Series for its 512-bit Memory Bus: AMD

In one of the first interviews post GeForce GTX 900 series, AMD maintained that its Radeon R9 290 series products are still competitive. Speaking in an interview with TweakTown, Corporate Vice President of Global Channel Sales, Roy Taylor, said that gamers should choose the Radeon R9 290X "with its 512-bit memory bus" at its current price of US $370. He stated that the current low pricing with R9 290 series is due to "ongoing promotions within the channel," and that AMD didn't make an official price adjustment on its end. Taylor dodged questions on when AMD plans to launch its next high-end graphics products, whether they'll level up to the GTX 900 series, and on whether AMD is working with DICE on "Battlefield 5." AMD Mobile "Carrizo" Family of APUs Arrive in 2015

AMD (NYSE: AMD) today at its Future of Compute event announced the addition of its first high performance system-on-a-chip (SoC), codenamed "Carrizo", and a mainstream SoC codenamed "Carrizo-L" as part of the company's 2015 AMD Mobile APU family roadmap. In collaboration with hardware and software partners, these new 2015 AMD Mobile APUs are designed as complete solutions for gaming, productivity applications, and ultra high-definition 4K experiences. With support for Microsoft DirectX 12, OpenCL 2.0, AMD's Mantle API, AMD FreeSync and support for Microsoft's upcoming Windows 10 operating system, the 2015 AMD Mobile APU family enables the experiences consumers expect.

AMD Announces Major Technology Partnerships at Future of Compute Event

AMD today at its Future of Compute event announced the introduction of the consumer electronic industry's first-ever ultra high-definition (UHD) monitors to feature its innovative, open-standards based FreeSync technology. Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., plans to launch the screen synching technology around the world in March 2015, starting with the Samsung UD590 (23.6-inch and 28-inch models) and UE850 (23.6-inch, 27-inch and 31.5-inch models), and eventually across all of Samsung's UHD lineups. FreeSync will enable dynamic refresh rates synchronized to the frame rate of AMD Radeon graphics cards and APUs to maximally reduce input latency and reduce or fully eliminate visual defects during gaming and video playback.

"We are very pleased to adopt AMD FreeSync technology to our 2015 Samsung Electronics Visual Display division's UHD monitor roadmap, which fully supports open standards," said Joe Chan, Vice President of Samsung Electronics Southeast Asia Headquarters. Corsair Releases Hydro Series HG10 GPU Liquid Cooling Bracket

Corsair, a worldwide leader in high-performance PC hardware, today announced the immediate availability of the Hydro Series HG10 A1 Edition GPU liquid cooling bracket for AMD Radeon R9 290X and 290 graphics cards. AMD Outs Catalyst 14.11.2 Beta

AMD rolled out its latest Catalyst software suite, version 14.11.2 Beta. These drivers add optimizations for two recently launched AAA games, namely FarCry 4, and Dragon Age: Inquisition. With FarCry 4, Catalyst 14.11.2 offers up to 50 percent increase in single-GPU performance, with anti-aliasing enabled, over Catalyst 14.11.1. With Dragon Age: Inquisition, the driver offers a 5 percent performance increase. This driver comes with a CrossFire profile for Dragon Age: Inquisition. AMD Awarded $32 Million for 'Extreme Scale' High-Performance Computing Research

AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced that for the third straight year it was awarded research grants for development of critical technologies needed for extreme-scale computing in conjunction with projects associated with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Extreme-Scale Computing Research and Development Program, known as "FastForward 2."

The two DOE awards, totaling more than $32 million, will fund research focused on exascale applications for AMD Accelerated Processing Units (APUs) based on the open-standard Heterogeneous System Architecture (HSA), as well as future memory systems to power a generation of exascale supercomputers capable of delivering 30-60 times more performance than today's fastest supercomputers.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN II Detailed

Riding on the success of its GM204 silicon, it looks like NVIDIA won't wait for the 20 nm silicon fab process to build its next big GPU, which powers its enthusiast-segment graphics cards. The GM200 silicon will be built on the existing 28 nm silicon fab process. Among other SKUs, NVIDIA's next GeForce GTX TITAN product, the GTX TITAN II, could be based on this chip. A curious-looking data entry was submitted from an anonymous source to SiSoft's hardware database, which gives away some rather glaring details of the GM200.

To begin with, the GM200 will be built on the existing 28 nm node, and will feature a die-area of 551 mm². The chip will be based on the "Maxwell" architecture, and feature 3,072 CUDA cores, cushioned by a 3 MB L3 cache. The chip will likely feature a 384-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface, with lossless texture compression algorithms, which work to step up memory bandwidth. The standard memory amount is a staggering 12 GB, double that of the first-generation GTX TITAN. Given how AMD recently gave 8 GB variants of its Radeon R9 290X a coordinated launch, GPU vendors could be seeing a utility in giving their products such massive amounts of video memory, to cope with resolutions such as 4K Ultra HD, and perhaps even 5K 16xHD. The chip features reasonably high clock speeds, with the core running at 1100 MHz, and a staggering 1390 MHz GPU Boost. The memory, however, is clocked at 6.00 GHz.

AMD to Give 20 nm Optical Shrinks to Console SoCs First

AMD has the unique distinction of supplying SoCs to all three leading game console vendors simultaneously - Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo. The company, like NVIDIA, is looking forward with perched eyes for manufacturing partner TSMC to get its 20 nanometer silicon fabrication node running full-cylinders. Unlike NVIDIA, which may use the new process to shrink its GPUs, or launch bigger chips based on its "Maxwell" architecture, AMD will treat its console SoCs with optical-shrinks to the new nodes first, so the company could immediately eke out better margins, as console gamers upgrade to Xbox One or the PlayStation 4.

AMD's SoC for the Xbox One, could be the first in line for this optical shrink to 20 nm. This chip features a transistor count of 5 billion, and houses eight 64-bit x86 CPU cores, and a 768 SP GPU based on the Graphics CoreNext architecture; 48 MB of on-die cache, and a quad-channel DDR3 IMC. The chip also features an integrated core logic. AMD's chip for the PlayStation 4 features design inputs from Sony. The chip features the same CPU component, but a 1152 SP GPU, and a 256-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface, wired to 8 GB of memory that's virtualized for both system- and graphics-memory. AMD Radeon Supercharges Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth with Mantle API

AMD today joins Firaxis Games in celebrating the release of Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth, which features day-one support for AMD's Mantle graphics API to enable top gaming performance for AMD Radeon graphics customers.

TechPowerUp GPU-Z v0.8.0 Released

TechPowerUp rolled out the latest version of GPU-Z, the popular graphics subsystem information, diagnostic, and monitoring app, which no enthusiast can leave home without. Version 0.8.0 introduces support for a large number of new GPUs, and fixes several bugs. To begin with, GPU-Z 0.8.0 adds full support for GeForce GTX 980 and GTX 970, including a reliable method of extracting BIOS from GeForce "Maxwell" GPUs. Support is also added for Quadro K420, K620, K2000D, K2200, K4200, K5200; and Radeon R5 M240, R5 M255, FirePro W2100, W4100, W8100, FireStream 9270, FirePro 2450. GPU-Z 0.8.0 now accurately measures dedicated and dynamic memory usage on Windows 8 and 8.1 systems. GPU-Z now correctly reads the ROP and stream processor counts of AMD "Tonga" GPU, with updated die-size info. Stuttering on systems with CrossFire ULPS is fixed. AMD Reports 2014 Third Quarter Results

AMD today announced revenue for the third quarter of 2014 of $1.43 billion, operating income of $63 million and net income of $17 million, or $0.02 per share. Non-GAAP operating income was $66 million and non-GAAP net income was $20 million, or $0.03 per share.

"AMD's third quarter financial performance reflects progess in diversifying our business," said Dr. Lisa Su, AMD president and CEO. "Our Enterprise, Embedded and Semi-Custom segment results were strong; however, performance in our Computing and Graphics segment was mixed based on challenging market conditions that require us to take further steps to evolve and strengthen the financial performance of this business. Our top priority is to deliver leadership technologies and products as we continue to transform AMD."

8K A Great Challenge: NVIDIA and AMD

Even as 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) is beginning to enter the consumer mainstream, with 28-inch displays being priced around $600, and Apple toying with 5K (5120 x 2880), with its next-generation iMac Retina desktops, Japanese display maker Sharp threw a spanner in the works, by unveiling a working prototype of its 8K (7680 x 4320 pixels) display, at the CETAC trade-show, held in Japan.

Two of the industry's biggest graphics processor makers, NVIDIA and AMD, reacted similarly to the development, calling 8K "a great challenge." Currently, neither company has a GPU that can handle the resolution. 8K is four times as many pixels as 4K. Driving an Ultra HD display over DVI needs two TMDS links, and DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI 2.0 have just enough bandwidth to drive Ultra HD at 60 Hz. To drive 8K, both NVIDIA and AMD believe you would need more than one current-generation GPU, the display should connect to both cards over independent connectors, and somehow treat the single display as four Ultra HD displays. We imagine Sharp demoed its display at a very low refresh rate, to compensate for the bandwidth limitation. After 10 years of Full-HD tyranny, display resolutions are finally beginning to see their normal rate of development. It's time now for GPU developers and display interconnects to keep up.

AMD Rolls Out Catalyst 14.9.1 Beta Driver

Shortly after the launch of its Catalyst 14.9 WHQL driver, AMD released a follow-up Catalyst 14.9.1 Beta driver, to address some immediate issues found with the driver. It addresses an intermittent black-screen or BSOD issue caused after driver installation of Catalyst 14.9 WHQL, Catalyst Control Center crash, random crash when enabling or disabling 4-way CrossFireX, and Battlefield 4 instability on systems with 4-way CrossFireX. It also fixes a system crash issue found with Sniper Elite III, on systems with 4-way CrossFireX.
