ASUS Enters the Premium PSU Market with the ROG THOR 1200W Platinum

ASUS this Computex expanded its Republic of Gamers (ROG) family with not just AIO liquid CPU coolers, but also high-end power-supplies (PSUs). The company showed off its ROG THOR 1200W Platinum, a fully-modular PSU with a design focus on practicality, software interface, 80 Plus Platinum rating, and high-grade components. We hear that under the hood, the OEM is SeaSonic, and that for the most part, this PSU is identical to the Prime Platinum 1200W, with the added digital interface, and aesthetic makeover.

Update: We went hands-on with the ASUS ROG THOR 1200W Platinum, and have more details. To begin with, the PSU features several RGB LED accents all over its body, including an ROG logo, which you control over Aura Sync RGB (for which there's an addressable RGB LED header). The PSU features up to twelve 6+2 pin PCIe connectors, two 4+4 pin EPS, and an OLED display that gives you real-time power-draw readouts. The cooling fan is IP5X dust-proof, and stays off under a load/temperature threshold. You can override the 0 dB mode at the push of a physical button at the back.

ASUS Enters Liquid PC Cooling with the ROG RYUO 120 and RYUJIN 240 AIO Coolers

ASUS added to the very long list of Republic of Gamers (ROG) branded hardware that can make up your gaming PC, with its first directly branded all-in-one liquid CPU cooler, the ROG RYUO 120 and the RYUJIN 240/360. Now, you might be thinking "hey look, it's yet another AIO cooler plastered with an ROG logo, a dash of RGB lighting, and a price-premium to make up for the brand," but pay close attention to the pump-block. It's studded with an actual 1.77-inch full-color OLED display, which shows the ROG logo out of the box, but when interfaced with software over a USB 2.0 header, it displays a host of things such as RPMs, coolant temperature, CPU temperature, a personalized logo, or even an animated GIF! This, besides an addressable RGB ring along the perimeter on the RYUO 120, and a polygonal element on the RYUJIN 240/360. If your interest is only piqued 99% by this point, allow the included Noctua IndustrialPPC fans, and M.2 SSD cooling to make up for the remaining 1% for the RYUJIN series. Not all Asetek-sourced AIO coolers are equal.

ASUS Intros H370 Mining Master Motherboard - Those Aren't USB Ports

ASUS rolled out one of its first crypto-currency miner-friendly motherboards based on the Intel 300-series chipset platform, now that cheaper Pentium Gold and Celeron processors for this platform are available. The H370 Mining Master puts out all 20 PCI-Express gen 3.0 lanes of the H370 Express chipset as x1 slots. It does this in a space-saving way - wiring out each PCIe "port" as USB 3.0 physically (using its 9 pins), which you wire out using USB 3.1 type-A male-to-male cables into open-ended PCIe x1 risers. You can plug in 20 graphics cards over risers, besides a 21st card on the board's PCI-Express 3.0 x16 slot.

The rest of the board is pretty spartan, which is what miners need. The LGA1151 socket is powered by a simple 4+2 phase VRM. Power is drawn from three 24-pin ATX, and one 8-pin EPS. The CPU socket is wired to two DDR4 DIMM slots, supporting up to 32 GB of dual-channel memory, the x16 slot, and the H370 Express chipset. Storage connectivity includes just two SATA 6 Gbps ports. You get six USB 3.0 ports (four on the rear panel, two via headers). Display outputs include DVI and HDMI. Legacy connectivity includes PS/2 combo, and one serial COM header. 6-channel HD audio, and one 1 GbE interface, driven by an Intel i219-V, makes for the rest of it. ASUS threw in onboard power/reset buttons, and POST debug display to sweeten things.

ASUS Intros ROG Aura Terminal

ASUS introduced the Republic of Gamers (ROG) Aura Terminal, an RGB LED control module that puts out four addressable RGB LED channels. This box plugs into one of your motherboard's USB 2.0 headers to interface with Aura Sync RGB software, and power is drawn either from a 4-pin Molex connector (if installed inside your case), or from a 45W power brick (if installed externally).

The ROG Aura Terminal supports up to 90 LEDs per channel, and up to 210 LEDs in all, working out to up to 4.2 meters in addressable RGB LED strips. The package includes two 30 cm and one 60 cm RGB LED strips, a 45W power adapter, a Molex to 2-pin DC adapter, a 9-pin USB 2.0 header to USB type-A adapter, stickers, and cable ties. ASUS Aura Sync RGB software is used to control all outputs from the box, including its glowing ROG logo. You also get ROG Halo, a feature that lets you task RGB LED strips stuck behind your monitor to work as ambient mood-lighting. The company didn't reveal pricing.

ASUS Intros ROG Swift PG27UQ Monitor with G-SYNC HDR

ASUS today introduced the Republic of Gamers (ROG) Swift PG27UQ, a 27-inch monitor with 4K Ultra HD resolution (3840 x 2160 pixels), a staggering 144 Hz refresh-rate, and support for NVIDIA G-Sync HDR. Under the hood is an IPS Quantum-Dot panel with DCI-P3 Color Gamut support, 4 ms response time, 178°/178° viewing angles, and 10-bpc (1.07 billion colors) support. 300-1000 cd/m² maximum brightness, and 20,000:1 static contrast ratio, make for the rest of the panel specifications.

The monitor features (and requires) DisplayPort 1.4 to sustain 4K @ 144 Hz with 10-bpc color. It also features HDMI 2.0. Also featured are GamePlus (OSD goodies), GameVisual (genre-specific display presets), a and 2-port USB 3.0 hub. The stand and the back-side of the display features RGB LED elements that can be controlled by Aura Sync RGB. The company didn't reveal pricing.

Where AREZ Thou, GPP? ASUS 180's, Announces ROG Branding is Here to Stay

Well, if doubts ever existed, those have been somewhat dispelled in recent times, but this must be the final nail in the GPP coffin. Hopefully, it's also the proverbial nail to show customers Green, Red and Blue (seldom-remembered Intel was also a target) of what exactly NVIDIA's program entailed. NVIDIA found itself in a rather embattled field against tech publications and consumers alike when the first match was lit on what GPP was and what it forced NVIDIA partners to do with their brands. Turns out exclusively aligning them with NVIDIA products would give incredibly relevant advantages compared to partners who didn't, forcing an otherwise healthy ecosystem to converge on the dominant market player.

After around two months of story coverage, NVIDIA terminated the GPP program - begrudgingly so, and seemingly forgetting everything about the way things are meant to be played. However, some AMD partners had already announced some exclusive AMD-branded graphics cards, with new, market recognition-absent brands such as ASUS's AREZ and (it all seems to point that way) MSI's MECH 2 series of graphics cards. What were they to do in the wake of GPP's earlier-than-expected burial? These companies spent marketing and design funds to come up with new brands and designs, after all.
UPDATE (22/05): ASUS informed us that the tweet which was the basis of the original report is not operated by ASUS. The company stated that it will continue to sell ASUS ROG and AREZ branded graphics cards side-by-side. ASUS is in the process of getting Twitter to take down the impersonating handle.

Jonsbo Intros NC-2 Memory Heatsink for RGB Heathens

The price-gap between basic DDR4 memory modules that even lack heatspreaders, and "premium" modules with RGB LED-studded heatspreaders, can be rather big. For those who'd prefer to pick up cheaper memory modules and light them up on the cheap, Jonsbo has come up with its second-generation RGB LED custom memory heatspreaders, with the NC-2, a successor to the NC-1 series from last year. A pack includes two units, for dual-channel memory setups. Each heatspreader consists of two brushed aluminium plates meeting on top, through which a chunky RGB LED diffuser peeks out.

The NC-2 features 256-color RGB LEDs, and comes in two variants based on control. The first variant is a "color" variant, or the "dumb" variant, which gives you limited manual control over pre-loaded lighting presets. The second, slightly pricier variant, is the "smart" variant, which takes input from ASUS Aura Sync RGB, over a standardized 4-pin header, giving you software control. Measuring 141 mm x 8.5 mm x 43 mm (WxDxH), each heatspreader weighs roughly 114 g. The NC-2 series starts around 80 RMB ($13 USD) for the basic variant, and around 120 RMB ($20 USD) for the Aura Sync-capable variant, which is a bargain, when you consider that RGB-enabled memory kits can be 20-30% pricier than basic ones that lack RGB lighting.

ASUS Announces New ZenBook Pro 15 (UX550G)

ASUS today announced the new ZenBook Pro 15 (UX550G), a high-performance 15.6-inch laptop that's now faster than ever. ASUS Intros Prime H310T Motherboard

ASUS rolled out the Prime H310T, one of the rare few thin mini-ITX motherboards based on Intel 300-series chipset, a boon for certain SFF cases such as the Akasa Euler series, or DIY all-in-one PC upgrades. Based on Intel H310 chipset, the board supports 8th generation Intel "Coffee Lake" processors (including 95W TDP chips). It draws power from 2-pin (12V DC in), and conditions it for the LGA1151 processor using a simple 3+1 phase VRM. The CPU socket is wired to two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots, which support up to 32 GB of dual-channel DDR4-2666 memory.

Storage connectivity includes a 32 Gbps M.2-2280 slot, and two SATA 6 Gbps ports. The only other expansion slot is an M.2 slot for WLAN modules. Display outputs include LVDS (useful in AIOs), DisplayPort, and HDMI. USB connectivity includes four 5 Gbps USB 3.1 gen 1 ports. 2-channel HD audio and gigabit Ethernet make for the rest of it.

Premium G-Sync, HDR Monitors from ASUS, ACER Reportedly Launching in Two Weeks

Well, so much for April being the month NVIDIA expected its partners to up their game and release their G-SYNC, HDR monitors - that opportunity has come and gone, in another delay for products that were supposed to arrive in 2017. However, as with most launches that fail to meet their timelines, the move is usually to simply shift the goalpost - and that's what's been done yet again. It's still unclear which reasons have led to the delays in launch - whether unrealistic NVIDIA specifications, problems in panel manufacturing at AU Optronics, who have their hands full right now.

However... It now seems (again) we are fast approaching the release date for (at least) two solutions based on the NVIDIA specs (3840×2160 resolution, 144 Hz refresh rate, a 1000-nits brightness, a direct LED backlighting system with 384 zones, and feature a quantum dot film to enable HDR10 and coverage of the DCI-P3 color gamut). Acer's X27 Predator and ASUS' PG27UQ are the two expected releases, but as you might guess, pricing won't be fair. Here's just hoping that it isn't as much out of court as this preorder page puts it, quoting €2556.50 for ASUS' PG27UQ. It's the extra fifty cents that breaks the illusion, really.

ASUS Begins Rolling Out 9-series Chipset Spectre/Meltdown Hardening BIOS Updates

ASUS has silently began rolling out motherboard BIOS updates for its Intel 9-series chipset motherboards, which provide hardening against "Meltdown" and "Spectre" vulnerabilities, through a CPU microcode update. Intel, if you'll recall, released microcode updates for "Haswell" and "Broadwell" processors this March, but you were at the mercy of your motherboard manufacturer to pass them on to you. The BIOS updates pack the latest version 24 microcode for 4th generation "Haswell" and 5th generation "Broadwell" processors in the LGA1150 package.

A small catch here, is that the BIOS updates are marked "beta" by ASUS, because the understanding is that all 9-series motherboards sold through 2014-15 are EOL, and have probably lapsed warranty coverage, so the company is limiting its liabilities in case BIOS updates fail, or if the platform still ends up "vulnerable" somehow. The latest version of InSpectre confirms that the latest BIOS for the Z97-A, one of the more popular motherboards by ASUS based on the Z97 Express chipset, passes hardening against Meltdown and Spectre, coupled with Windows 10 April 2018 Update. You should find the latest BIOS updates in the "Support" tab of the product page of your motherboard on ASUS website. Here's hoping other motherboard manufacturers love their customers as much.

FTC Gives Manufacturers 30 Days to Remove Warranty Void Stickers

Remember that time where the FTC announced they were cracking down on illegal, predatory warranty conditions? You know, such as those "warranty void if removed" stickers that don't really have any legal base towards their implementation - and eventual refusal of an actual warranty claim? Well, the gong has now sounded, and it will reverberate some 30 times: the amount of days the FTC has given companies to cease and desist on putting those stickers in newly shipped products.

ASUS Announces its AMD X470 Motherboard Lineup

4K Ultra HD Monitors with 144 Hz Refresh-rate and G-SYNC HDR Start Being Available

As we reported in March, the first 4K monitors with 144 Hz refresh-rate began showing up in stores. This summer, PC gamers and enthusiasts up for a monitor upgrade, are in for a treat. An increasing number of companies are preparing to launch monitors with not just 4K Ultra HD resolution (3840 x 2160 pixels), but also staggering 144 Hz refresh-rates, and support for adaptive sync technologies, such as AMD FreeSync and NVIDIA G-Sync. To push 4K at 144 Hz, you'll need your graphics card to feature DisplayPort 1.4 (or above) connectivity, as DisplayPort 1.2, or even the newer HDMI 2.0, lack the required bandwidth.

Among the first blazing fast 4K UHD + 144 Hz monitors, are the 2018 Acer Predator X27 (UM.HX0EE.009) first unveiled in 2017, and soon to be joined by the ASUS ROG Swift PG27UQ. Both monitors feature 4K Ultra HD resolution, 144 Hz refresh-rate, IPS quantum-dot panels, and support for the new NVIDIA G-SYNC HDR standard. The monitors take input from DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0, although you will need DisplayPort 1.4 to get 4K @ 144 Hz to work correctly.
