EA Introduces Split Fiction's Co-op Protagonists: Mio and Zoe

If you've played a Hazelight Studios game before, you know that the characters they create for you and your co-op partner come with unique personalities, backgrounds, and motivations that produce unforgettable moments as their stories unfold. Hazelight Studios is keeping that trend up as they introduce two new player characters in Split Fiction, which is launching on March 6. Take control of two unpublished authors, Mio and Zoe, who you will quickly find are worlds apart! When you first meet Mio and Zoe, they have been lured into Rader Publishing Headquarters with the promise of a potential publishing deal which goes horribly wrong, trapping them inside a simulation of their stories which you have to help them escape. In this blog, we're diving deeper into their characters so that you can confidently pick your favorite when you get your hands on the game!

Mio Hudson—Science Fiction author
Reserved. Decisive. Realist. Introvert. Raised in the city with her father, Mio has barely scraped by for the last couple of years. She isn't looking for fame or recognition as an author, she's just in it for the money. Her love for all things sci-fi is reflected in her literary works, taking place in neon-lit cyberpunk cities, harsh futuristic weapon plants, and even in the coldness of outer space. Expect to see her love for sci-fi shine through in the abilities she gains inside the simulations, where she may become a gravity-defying ninja equipped with a lethally sharp energy sword, wear an advanced exosuit that grants remote control of drones, or dual-wield laser blasters in futuristic combat armor.

Reikon Introduces Metal Eden, Slated for Launch on May 6

Hello everyone! We are very happy to be in the latest State of Play announcing to the world that Metal Eden, an adrenaline rush sci-fi FPS, will be releasing on May 6, 2025. Before we dive deeper into the gameplay, let's introduce you to the world of Metal Eden. First, a little bit of context. In the future, humanity ventures among the stars. To survive the journey to new star systems, humanity created the Cores. Each Core is a system capable of storing human data, preserving a digital record of a human psyche and rebuilding it upon reaching its destination. One such destination is Moebius, an artificial city built by corporations to extract precious minerals from the planet Vulcan. You are Aska, an android created by one of the city's founders. Nexus, your creator, has one goal for you: Follow orders, and maybe you will be able to save the inanimate colonists trapped in the Citadel.

One of the most unique gameplay mechanics in Metal Eden is Core Ripping. This feature enhances the combat experience by adding a strategic layer to how players engage with enemies. In this post, we'll delve into how you can master this ability to dominate your foes and make the most of Aska's powerful skills. The reveal trailer shows that, equipped with the Multitool, Aska can use its Gravity Beam to rip Cores out of enemies' bodies. Once grabbed, you can throw their Core at your enemies, creating an explosion. Brutal Core Ripping for quick and effective enemy disposal! Alternatively, Aska can consume the core. Consuming a core offers different advantages depending on your choices throughout the game - Like empowering your melee attacks, mobility or survivability. We will share more information about this in the future.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword Gameplay Showcased, Main Character Gets Introduced

During State of Play, we revealed a new trailer for the recently announced Onimusha: Way of the Sword. This time we get a glimpse of the game's daring protagonist in action. This entry in the swordplay action series is set in an early Edo period Kyoto, twisted by the influence of the encroaching Malice. The new trailer gives us a glimpse of this title's expressive protagonist as he fights for his very life. Along with a preview of the protagonist, we were also introduced to some of the enemies he will face, and how he will deal with them.

The protagonist—Miyamoto Musashi (Voice: Kenichiro Thomson)
An ardent samurai who arrives in Kyoto looking to prove that he is unmatched in the way of the sword. However, the path before him takes a strange and unexpected turn. The protagonist of this game is a fierce young samurai, constantly moving from one bloody and mucky fight to the next. In order to cement this image of a striking samurai, Capcom has turned to none other than the late, iconic Japanese samurai movie star Toshiro Mifune to serve as the face model for this rendition of Miyamoto Musashi.

Compulsion Games Shares South of Midnight Story & Gameplay Elements

Thursday, January 23 was a big day for all of us at Compulsion Games. In addition to being a part of Developer_Direct, where members of our studio team shared more about the gameplay, look, and feel of South of Midnight, our third-person action-adventure game set in the American Deep South, we announced our release date of April 8, 2025, and early access beginning April 3. If that wasn't enough, we also released our brand-new story trailer, which expands on the narrative of South of Midnight, while including all-new gameplay, characters, and mythical creatures from the game. We're so excited to share more about South of Midnight, which is available now for pre-orders.

The Story of South of Midnight
In our story trailer, protagonist Hazel and her mother are preparing for the impending hurricane. The storm proves massive, causing catastrophic flooding-and causing their own home to be swept down river with her mother in it. Its aftermath shows the fictional town of Prospero, located in the southern United States, eerily calm while irrevocably changed from the hurricane's destruction. Here, Hazel undertakes a journey in search of her mother, while finding out more about herself and her family's lineage in the process. Hazel begins to see fantastical phenomena all over Prospero, including meeting Catfish, an enormous—and talking—creature in his own right, stuck in a tree following the hurricane's destruction. Catfish tells Hazel she is a Weaver, someone who possesses magical powers and can see how our threads connect to form the woven tapestry of our fates.

Assassin's Creed Shadows Accessibility Features Explained

Assassin's Creed Shadows launches on March 20 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Amazon Luna, Macs with Apple silicon via the Mac App Store, and Windows PC through the Ubisoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store. Set during the late Sengoku era in Japan, players will play as both the stealthy shinobi Naoe and the formidable samurai Yasuke. No matter who you're playing as, the development team wanted to ensure that as many people as possible are able to enjoy everything that Assassin's Creed Shadows has to offer. To learn more about the team's approach to accessible design, we spoke with UX Director Jonathan Bedard.

Assassin's Creed Shadows is an evolution for the franchise, with many elements being rebuilt from the ground up. In what ways did that allow you to change your approach to accessibility?
Jonathan Bedard: Having changed the way we built the game, we had to redo many things, and it allowed us to revisit some elements that weren't working as well as we'd hoped. Certain features benefited from this by being retooled or by simply changing the interface itself - or in some cases, the functionalities - to elevate our offer and our experience to higher standards. One example of that is our input remapping. Not only can you adjust the inputs of any of the buttons, but you can adjust the action of that input, whether you want it to be a hold or a press.

The Last of Us Part I Updated with Support for FSR 3.1

The Last of Us Part I (PC version) was updated to version 1.1.4 last Friday—at the time, patch notes revealed that Iron Galaxy Studios/Nixxes Software had added support for AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 3.1 Super Resolution and FSR 3.1 Frame Generation. Several popular first-party PlayStation titles received similar updates mid-way through last year, so industry watchdogs have questioned the timing of this latest upgrade—up until late last week, The Last of Us Part I was ticking along with support for FSR 3.0 (super resolution and frame generation).

Naturally, Team Red is in the process of preparing FSR 4.0 for an upcoming product launch—now delayed, due to the engineering team requiring: "extra time to optimize the software stack for maximum performance and enable more titles." AMD's latest graphics technology was showcased at CES earlier this month, alongside their new (RDNA 4) Radeon RX 9070 XT and 9070 (non-XT) graphics cards. According to Team Red, it is relatively easy to go from version 3.1 up to 4.0. The Last of Us Part I's development team (for PC platforms) could have everything ready to go in a couple of weeks, and be prepared well in advance for the game's sequel (due in April).
