Some Corsair Hydro Series H100 Coolers Affected with Fan Controller Issues

An increasing number of users of Corsair's Hydro Series H100 CPU water cooler have been reporting issues with its fan-controller on the company forums. Acknowledging this, Corsair issued a general warning to all owners of the H100 that it's likely that some of the coolers might be part of a bad manufacturing batch. It looks like Corsair is taking steps towards a general recall (taking back batches of H100 coolers off the shelves, and asking users of affected batches to return their coolers for free replacement).

Affected Hydro Series H100 series units belong to batch #11359403 (the number under the first barcode in the serial number sticker on your H100 package). The issue itself is related to the button on the unit that changes fan profiles. On affected coolers, the button doesn't change the fan profile, and the fan works on the default speeds. This doesn't quite render the cooler dysfunctional, but the cooler doesn't work as advertised, so it's a severe-enough quality issue. Alpenfohn Announces K2 Twin-Tower CPU Cooler

Alpenföhn is aiming at the performance crown under the CPU coolers with the K2. For this, Alpenföhn is employing two cooling towers and ships the unit with two, potent Wing Boost fans. Alpenfohn Unveils Triglav CPU Cooler with 10 mm Thick Heat Pipes

European company EKL's Alpenfohn unveiled the first pictures of its Triglav tower-type CPU cooler. Its heatsink makes use of 'massive' 10 mm thick heat pipes. To put that into some perspective, 4~6 mm thick heat pipes are common, 8 mm thick ones have till now been considered thickest, for round heat pipes. The three 10 mm thick heat pipes are made of nickel-plated copper, and pass through 46 aluminum fins that are arranged in a turbulence-inducing pattern (improves heat dissipation, so fan speed can be lowered at its expense). Cooler Master Intros Hyper 612S CPU Cooler

Cooler Master rolled out its newest performance CPU cooler, the Hyper 612S. It is a large tower-type heatsink that is designed to maximize heat dissipation at lower fan speeds. It does so with a different orientation of copper heat pipes. The heat pipes pass through the base, and along the length of the aluminum fin stack, rather than its breadth. As a result heat is dissipated more uniformly along the air column. The fins are designed to curve air path, to improve heat dissipation. Ventilation is care of a 120 mm fan, although there's provision for dual fan "push-pull" set up.

The cooler measures 140x128x163 mm, weighing 806 g. The bundled 120 mm fan has a top speed of 1300 RPM ±10% pushing 52.6 CFM of air, and uses a 3-pin fan connector. A "Silent mode adapter" (intermediate resistor) slows it down to 900 RPM, reducing its air flow to 36.4 CFM. Between full speed and silent modes, the rated noise levels vary between 22.5 and 16.1 dBA. The Hyper 612S supports all current CPU socket types, including Intel LGA1366/1156/1155/775, and AMD Socket AM3/AM2+/AM2. Available in the markets by September, the Hyper 612S is expected to be priced around 45 Euros.

New Sandia CPU Cooler Design Offers Fundamental Breakthrough in Heat Transfer

Sandia National Laboratories has developed a new technology with the potential to dramatically alter the air-cooling landscape in computing and microelectronics, and lab officials are now seeking licensees in the electronics chip cooling field to license and commercialize the device.

The "Sandia Cooler," also known as the "Air Bearing Heat Exchanger," is a novel, proprietary air-cooling invention developed by Sandia researcher Jeff Koplow, who was recently selected by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) to take part in the NAE's 17th annual U.S. Frontiers of Engineering symposium.

GELID Intros Tranquillo Rev. 2 CPU Cooler

GELID today announced a revision of its Tranquillo CPU cooler. Revision 2 of this aluminum fin tower-type cooler comes with three major changes, an updated heat pipe profile; a new AMD socket clip that allows 4x 90° installation; and an improved heatsink shape. To begin with, the four exposed-copper heat pipes project out of the fanned out better, with the heat pipes almost reaching the periphery of each of the fins. Next, a new AMD socket clip allows you to orient the heatsink in the same way you can with the square bolt layout of Intel sockets (90° in any direction). Lastly, in the space between the CPU base and the bottom of the aluminum fin stack, GELID put a larger heatsink than the one found on the original Tranquillo. The Tranquillo Rev. 2 is certified to work on Intel sockets LGA1366, LGA1156, LGA1155, and LGA775; AMD sockets AM3, AM2+, and AM2. The company did not give out pricing information, but usually revised SKUs carry the same market prices as the originals they're revisions of.

Arctic Intros Freezer 13 Continuous Operation Series CPU Coolers

Cooling expert Arctic introduced two new CPU coolers specifically designed for gaming/enthusiast PCs that stay on 24x7, or for "continuous operation" as the company puts it. The duo consist of the bigger Freezer 13 Pro CO and smaller Freezer 13 CO, designed for thermal loads of up to 300W and 200W, respectively. The 24x7-readiness comes from the fans, that use dual ball-bearing and are designed to be less sensitive to dust. Arctic claims that the fans used are 5 times more durable than generic fans. Both are aluminum fin tower-type heatsinks that consist of U-shaped copper heat pipes that pass through a copper base, conveying heat to the arms that pass through the aluminum fin stack.

Measuring 134L x 96W x 159H mm, and weighing 893 g, the Freezer 13 Pro CO uses a 120 mm fan that spins at 300 - 1350 RPM, pushing 49.7 CFM of air through the heatsink. It also uses a 50 mm blower that sits on top of the CPU base, which resembles the blowers found in single-slot VGA coolers, it spins at speeds of 700 - 2700 RPM, blowing air in all directions, cooling the components around the CPU socket such as VRM, memory, and northbridge. It uses four copper heat pipes that pass through the heat fins in a uniform file. The Freezer 13 Pro CO is priced at US $58.32.

Noctua Displays New Compact, Low-Profile CPU Cooler Prototype

Noctua displayed a new low-profile, top-flow CPU cooler prototype, that's capable of low-profile mode with a height of just 66 mm, making it fit for certain slim form-factor ITX cases. The prototype uses a C-type top-flow heatsink, similar to the NH-C14, only much smaller, and thinner. It uses four heat-pipes to convey heat to a dense aluminum fin array. Unlike on the NH-C14, this prototype uses a dual-fan design in which the bottom fan is smaller. While the top-fan is a 120 mm Focused Airflow, while the bottom fan is a 92 mm NF-B9. The cooler can be run in dual-fan mode with both fans installed (cooler height will be 91 mm), or single-fan low-profile mode with the top fan removed (cooler height of 66 mm). A "high-clearance mode" with the bottom fan removed also looks possible.

Corsair Announces New Hydro Series Liquid CPU Coolers

Corsair, a worldwide designer and supplier of high-performance components to the PC gaming hardware market, today announced two new models in its award-winning Hydro Series family of high-performance liquid CPU coolers.

The Hydro Series H80 and H100 feature the latest cooling performance technology, simple installation, and maintenance-free operation. Both include a low-profile, light-weight cooling unit with a micro-channel copper cold plate and a split-flow manifold for superior cooling, and digital fan control, allowing the user to select between low-noise, balanced, and maximum cooling modes. The H80 includes a double-thick 120mm radiator for compatibility with virtually all standard ATX PC cases. The top-of-the-line H100 uses a dual 120mm radiator for even better performance, and is compatible with PC cases that provide mounting capability for a standard 240mm radiator.

EVGA Intros SuperClock, its First CPU Air Cooler

Here is the first EVGA-branded CPU air cooler, the EVGA SuperClock. Based on the design of Swiftech Polaris 120, the EVGA SuperClock uses nearly the same materials, but uses black-colored fins and heat pipes, apart from an illuminated fan. Like the original, the main heatsink consists of a heat pipe direct contact base, where the five heat pipes make direct contact with the CPU, the pipes in the central portion of the base (which receive most of the heat), propagate from a portion of the aluminum fin array that gets the maximum airflow. The heatsink is ventilated by a 120 mm spinner that lights up red, spins at 750 - 2500 RPM, pushing up to 84 CFM of air. At US $49.99, it's cheaper than the Swiftech Polaris 120, that's priced at $59.99 on the company store.

Scythe Announces Kozuti Top-Flow Low-Profile CPU Cooler

The Japanese manufacturer Scythe Co. Ltd. (Tokyo, Japan) officially announces the availability of new low profile Top-Flow CPU Cooler Kozuti. Unlike regular coolers, the fan is positioned below the fins, reducing the total height of the cooler significantly.

The Kozuti CPU Cooler is equipped with a total of three 6mm heat pipes. Applying the newly developed S.F.M.S (Stealth Fan Mounting Structure) the heatpipes are arranged in a low profile oval structure. This enables to provide space for the 80 x 80 x 10mm fanmotor in between the oval structure and below the fins, making it merely 40mm in height. This positions the cooler to be our most compact and slim cooler fit for HTPCs and slim chassis systems. Active cooling is achieved by the 80 x 80 x 10 mm slim fan the speed of 800 rpm (± 30%) - 3.300 rpm (± 10%), generating an air flow of 6.0 CFM ~ 24.82CFM = 10.2 m³ / h ~ 42.2 m³ / h at a noise level of 8.2 ~ 32.5 dBA.

Upcoming Corsair Hydro Series H80, H100 CPU Coolers Listed

A Swedish online store early-listed two of Corsair's unheard of upcoming CPU coolers in the Hydro series, the Hydro H80 and Hydro H100. The Hydro series includes pre-assembled, closed-loop CPU water-cooling kits that are relatively inexpensive compared to full-fledged custom-made loops. Corsair sources these kits from OEMs such as CoolIT and Asetek. Both new models are positioned above the existing single-fan slim H50, single-fan bigger radiator H60, and double-fan (push-pull) bigger radiator H70.

The Hydro H80 uses a thick 120x120 mm area radiator that's roughly as big as that of the H70, but has a bigger block unit, probably amounting to higher water flow. The block unit also appears to have a control knob. The Hydro H100, on the other hand, uses a large 240x120 mm area radiator that can hold two 120 mm fans on either sides, but comes with two fans. It seems like H100 has the same exact block unit as the H80, with its control knob. The Hydro H100 is listed at 1,075 Swedish Krona (US $172.5), while the Hydro H80 is listed at 965 Krona ($154).

Deepcool Announces Assassin Twin-Tower CPU Cooler

Deepcool, a professional manufacturer of heatsink and cooling devices, unveils a new fancy CPU
cooler today, called Assassin. Performance-and-Silence is the core of this twin-tower designed air cooler. Featuring eight 6mm copper heatpipes and a shining nickel plated heatsink, the Assassin could dissipate heat very effectively. The Assassin will come with two fans, both of which are patented with rubber cover frame.

One fan is 120mm functioning as the pushing force, and the other is 140mm that could be mounted between the two towers to draw hot air through the heatsink. In addition, a third fan can be attached if the motherboard design allows it. And the Assassin is fully equipped to support Intel LGA775/1155/1156/1366 and AMD AM2/AM2+/AM3. The launch date and price is unknown for the moment.

Alpenföhn Almost Ready with K2 High-End CPU Cooler

Alpenföhn is giving final touches to its K2 high-end CPU cooler. The K2 is large-size CPU cooler that resembles the Noctua NH-D14 in design. It uses eight 6 mm thick nickel-plated copper heat pipes that convey heat to two independent aluminum fin arrays. There are two fans that ventilate a fin array each, one pushes air onto the first array, while a second nested between the two arrays, conveys air to the second. Alpenföhn's innovation here is the unique wavy pattern that differently-sized aluminum fins form, probably improving heat dissipation by creating high-pressure areas. The K2 comes with two, WingBoost fans the first one is 120 mm, and the one in the middle is 140 mm. Expect the Alpenföhn K2 to be priced around the €75 mark.

Alpenföhn Ready with Heidi 2 Universal GPU Cooler

Try not to mistake this for a low-profile CPU cooler, Alpenföhn's latest offering is the Heidi 2 universal graphics card cooler. First pictured at this year's CeBIT event, the Heidi 2 looks more polished and ready to market. Its main heatsink consists of an aluminum fin array to which heat is conveyed by four 6 mm thick nickel-plated copper heat pipes. The 50-odd aluminum fins make for distinct shapes at the edge of the fin array, which improve heat dissipation. The heat pipes converge at a nickel-plated copper base.

The main heatsink measures 144 x 133 x 62 mm, weighing 450 g. Ventilation is care of a 120 mm Alpenföhn WingBoost fan.
